Staying in this 19th century mill you are perfectly positioned to visit the sights of historic Malmesbury and the delights of the Cotswolds. You are surrounded by rivers and streams down a quiet street which is used more by dog walkers than cars. Wynyard Mill is a unique home set over several half floors with open brick walls showing the original archways where the mill wheels sat. During the day you can enjoy the walks which start from your doorstep and meander around Malmesbury or spend time in the extensive 3/4 acre garden beyond the mill leat playing games with your children and dogs. In the evenings visit the country pubs and restaurants within walking distance or enjoy a homecooked meal served in the bright and spacious kitchen/diner. The comfortable living room has a modern wood burner so you can enjoy time together here if the weather isn’t as appealing listening to the mill water rush beneath you. From Malmesbury you are a short drive from Westonbirt Arboretum, Highgrove Gardens, Tetbury and even Cotswold Water Park.

Overview

Escape to a 19th century water mill for a family holiday in the Cotswold town of Malmesbury. Arriving across a small bridge over the Tetbury Avon you find an unusual split-level home over three floors with the mill waters running beneath. Slate and wooden floors combined with open brick walls and arch details where the mill wheels once sat keep the character and history of the building alive.

The living room fills with the tumbling of the water rushing below and is a homely space with a modern wood burner where you can spend time relaxing after following the riverside walking routes from your doorstep. The open kitchen/diner is spacious and bright with wooden beams and from its raised position has views out to the outdoor space, which is larger than you’ll first think. Each bedroom faces the river to the front of the mill which flows around the house to meet the mill waters.

Outside is a triangular garden with a patio and lawned area but follow the wooden bridge and footpath and you will find the extensive grounds beyond. When the weather allows you will spend most of your time here with a picnic watching the children play or relax enjoying a book while lazing in the grass. This is a wonderful base for exploring around historic Malmesbury and the southern Cotswolds.

Ground Floor

Entrance Hall:
With a slate tiled floor and open brick wall you instantly get a taste of Wynyard Mill and the styling you will find throughout. There is a lovely wooden bench for taking your boots off and enough storage space for coats and bags.

Boot Room:
Along from the entrance hall is the boot room which has garden access and lots of additional storage. There is an old archway showing in the wall here which reminds you of the history of the mill. This boot room is a great place to bring the dogs in from outside to dry them off.

Utility Room:
Keeping the noise of household necessities away from your holiday there is a washing machine, dryer, and sink in the utility. Looking out to the garden you see the sitting area and eye-catching stone statue while you do the laundry.

Bathroom:
Set away from the main living spaces the bathroom has a freestanding rolltop bath with a handhelf shower, so you can escape for a bit of peace and quiet. Closing the blind, you can float away in the bubbles and relax. It is convenient for the first-floor bedroom and means you won’t have to be queuing in the mornings.

First Floor

Up five steps you reach the first floor of this split-level home.

Living Room:
The large living room is alive with the sound of the mill water rushing below which becomes a unique background noise for your stay. A sofa and chairs gathered around the modern wood burner and TV are where you’ll relax in the evenings. Notice the original features like the brick arch under the windows looking out to the garden which blooms with snowdrops in the spring along the river. The front windows look across to the river passing by. From this room you can step out into the garden directly onto the patio.

Office:
This useful room provides a quiet spot for anybody that unfortunately can’t leave their work behind. With a desk and office chair it is a comfortable place to work without being disturbed.

Bedroom One:
This twin room is just off the living room looking out to the front of the house. The two single beds share a bedside table and lamp and are separated from the study by a glass brick wall which obscures the view. There are large built-in cupboards to hide away your suitcase and clothes so you can feel at home.

Second Floor

Six steps up from the living room takes you to the second floor.

Kitchen/Diner:
This spacious, light and airy room has high ceilings with wooden beams and a view in each direction. To the front of the house is the quiet street and river, to the side is the village bowling green and behind is the riverside garden and patio. This room has a dining table to one side, a table and comfortable chairs for a morning coffee and the kitchen. It is well equipped with an oven, hob, two fridges and a dishwasher. It is a fantastic room for evening meals together. From the kitchen is a decked area with steps leading down to the garden making it easier to take meals outside.

Third Floor

Six steps take you up to the third floor which is the last in the house. A blue hallway with painted brick walls and exposed wood takes you down to the bedrooms.

Bedroom Two:
Adding colour, the brick wall has been painted which brings this room to life. A super king-size bed, dressing table and bedside tables furnish the room and there are also built in cupboards. Looking out to the river at the front this is a comfortable retreat for a great night’s sleep.

Bedroom Three:
The final bedroom has a king-size bed and the exposed brick wall has been left bare. Equally comfortable, each bedroom has a very different feel and style so you will have to choose your favourite. Also at the front of the house, this bedroom has a dressing table, bedside tables and additional storage.

Shower Room:
The final room on this floor is the shower room, perfect for sharing between these two bedrooms. It has a shower, sink and WC.

Outside

The outside space at this mill is spectacular. With the river running along the left and the mill water to the right the first outdoor space is surrounded by the soothing sounds of water. A decked area is raised by the kitchen entrance and there is a patio with a large table and chairs. At the end of this garden is a stone statue and a gate leading out over the wooden walkway. Along the waterside path past the neighbouring houses you reach the larger 3/4 acre garden beyond. This sloped garden has space for taking dogs for a short walk and to sit by the river and enjoy the views. Children will love finding all the hidden spaces in this garden and playing games. There is a table and chairs at the end for an evening drink as the sun goes down.

Stunning property

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had such a fantastic break at Wynyard Mill. The property is gorgeous and we loved how the river gushed under the sitting room! The garden is stunning - you can cross a little bridge and there is a huge plot to wander in. The huge garden and the fact the properly is right next to a public footpath meant our dogs loved their stay! It was a short stroll into the centre of beautiful Malmesbury where there is a wide selection of shops, cafes, restaurants and the impressive Abbey. There is also a Waitrose and an Aldi a short drive from the property. We visited the nearby Westonbirt Arboretum where the autumn colours were stunning. I would highly recommend this gorgeous property and we would definitely return next time we visit this area.

Never mind the hills

Verified Up Front Reviews
Absolutely stunning property and location. A lovely dog walk directly outside the property. Beds really comfortable and a well equipped kitchen with everything you could need. A bit disappointed there was no welcome pack a pint of milk would have been welcome. The area is ideal for exploring the Cotswolds, but climbing the hill to the town centre was a challenge as it was VERY steep, possibly worth considering if you suffer from mobility issues. However, the town centre does level out and there is a large car park available close to the Abbey.

A wonderful place to stay in Malmesbury

Verified Up Front Reviews
This was our second visit to Wynyard Mill in Malmesbury and hopefully not our last. Why do we like it so much? Firstly, it is a very comfortable place to stay - it is very quiet but also just a few minutes walk from the town centre. The house is beautifully furnished and spacious. If you have ever stayed anywhere else in Malmesbury, you will know how wonderful it is to have two parking spaces available. If you have a dog, they will enjoy the riverside walk only 5 minutes walk from the Mill. Overall, Wynyard Mill, with its amazing "secret" garden, is one of the best holiday cottages we have ever stayed in. It comes highly recommended.

Just what we needed

We had a fantastic stay at Wynyard Mill. The house was spacious, well-presented, and had everything we needed. It’s located in a lovely town with plenty of charm and amenities close by, making it perfect for what we wanted. A great place to relax and enjoy the area—would happily stay again.

Great location, spotlessly clean, charming old mill with one of the loveliest gardens I’ve come across. Short walk to all Malmesbury has to offer. Highly recommend.

The Mill needs updating and the garden was a disappointment

Verified Up Front Reviews
Whilst we did enjoy our time at the mill, there are certainly some improvements which should be made. Good points: bathrooms very clean, beds very comfy and clean, lovely bed linen. Bad points: carpets and furniture need replacing, very old fashioned and smell of moths. Kitchen needs a deep clean, there was grease on the floor near the cooker. The property had not been hoovered so there was a lot of dog hair in the rug in the kitchen. I tried to hoover, but it was broken. There was also loo roll stuck in all the toilet brushes, which made me question the cleanliness. The garden for us was the main disappointment. It clearly had not been looked after for a long time, weeds growing everywhere, in need of sweeping and general tidying up. Lawn was essentially moss and weeds. It's a shame as it could be a beautiful garden.

Fabulous stay with our grown up family and the dog ! All round great 4 night stay. The layout, the garden and it was in a great location. Well appointed kitchen too.

Absolutely loved this house. I loved how big and spacious it was and in an excellent location. Listening to the river was different and quite a special place to stay. It had everything you need for a self-catering break. I definitely hope to stay again.

Totally Gorgeous!

We had a totally wonderful Christmas week at Wynyard Mill. Gorgeous location - we could hear the Avon rushing under the house from the 1st floor - so cool! Everything was immaculate, lovely furnishings & decor, beautiful subtle lighting with lots of nice lamp options. Very helpful Welcome guide full of useful info re walks, eateries & places of interest. We cooked Christmas dinner for family here & we had all the utensils, appliances & crockery we needed. The kitchen could not have been better kitted out. We had several London friends pop over during the week and everyone fell in love with the place. We enjoyed using the downstairs boot room where we could hang our wet coats, appreciated the great laundry room and drying racks, loved the spaciousness and having 3 floors, really enjoyed the comfort of the bedrooms and loved the bath. Quite honestly our hosts could not have created a more welcoming environment - the Christmas crackers, choccies & bottle of bubbles left for us was so kind & thoughtful.

I stayed in Wynyard Mill with 4 friends in October 2024 - the accomodation was easy to find and access was simple with the key box. The mill was clean and a quirky layout - we loved the kitchen / dining area which was well equipped for cooking. Beds were all very comfy with warm duvets and there were logs / matches provided for lighting the fire in the living room which made it really cosy. Absolutely beautiful surrounds and only a short walk to Malmsbury. Thank you for a fantastic stay!

We absolutely loved our brief stay at Wynyard Mill and would love to return . As a family of 5 adults and a toddler we were extremely comfortable . The beds in particular deserve a mention …. Super comfy with good pillows . The kitchen was equipped extremely well … as good as at home ! The wi fi worked well . Situated just in Malmesbury we loved being able to wander around and briefly visit the Abbey . Definitely a full 5 star property … just for note … there are a lot of different levels for toddlers or anyone with a disability !

Marvellous in Malmesbury

Verified Up Front Reviews
We very much enjoyed our stay at Wynyard Mill. The property is very comfortable - well furnished and spacious with everything you need. The gardens are a delight - we enjoyed sitting outside on the balcony and on the patio area next to the mill stream and exploring the larger garden along the path over the bridge. It is an excellent place to stay with your dog - there are good dog walking places from the door and we enjoyed exploring the footpaths to Lea and Cowbridge. I have only two minor gripes about our stay - we could not find any instructions as to how to boost the hot water and the towels were on the tiny side - some bath sheets would have been appreciated. We look forward to visiting Wynyard Mill again - it is an excellent base while we visit our family in the area while also enjoying Malmesbury, Tetbury, Westonbirt Arboretum and the beauty of the South Cotswolds.

A holiday making lasting memories

Verified Up Front Reviews
Wynyard Mill exceeded expectations, from the pictures you can't get the true feeling of how beautiful it was inside and out. The Mill itself was stunning, spotlessly clean and furnished to a extremely high standard. There is nothing I would change about it. My dad who has dementia loved to sit in the large floor to ceiling window and watch the bowls, having the bowling green right next door to the Mill. This was a added bonus. Also the secret garden at the back of the Mill, which was reached over the gated Bridge in the garden, was also an added feature we didnt expect, we sat outside the summer house having a picnic. The walks were beautiful and we chose the ones that weren't too far due to my elderly parents. The town itself is on your door step and everyone is so friendly. We ate out every night and we were able to take our dog Maisie to, as the restaurants were dog friendly. The Mill is situated in a beautiful quiet spot right on the river. We have made memories to last a lifetime, thank you

Lovely cottage in peaceful location!

Verified Up Front Reviews
Very spacious cottage in a beautiful setting next to the river. Set over three levels with lots of space for everyone. Beds and furnishings were comfortable and of good quality. Lovely to hear the water running under the cottage each night. Great that new bottles of oil, balsamic, ketchup and brown sauce were supplied. To improve it would be good to have 6 chairs rounds the dining table (as only 5), better maintenance of the summer house (as pretty run down and dirty) and bigger towels (as pretty small). Malmesbury is small but pleasant with a few nice eateries and lovely abbey!

lovely stay

Verified Up Front Reviews
We are a group of five friends and had a lovely reunion at Wynard Mill. The accommodation is very spacious and comfortable, and we were very lucky with the weather so could sit outside by the water for much of our weekend. It's very well equipped too. Just one small thing: we felt the supply of toilet roll was rather mean - 2 and a bit for the entire weekend for five of us in the two bathrooms, so we had to go and buy more. The same with the log supply, which burned out very quickly as it's a large, powerful fire. These are small points though, and we do very much recommend the property.

Family Gathering

Verified Up Front Reviews
Our stay at Wynyard Mill was perfect. The property is furnished to a very high standard and is very well equipped. The beds are all very comfy with hotel standard pillows and bedding. The housekeeper Dawn was very quick to reply to any queries we had. There is a great circular walk from the property. We saw Kingfishers sitting on the fence outside the kitchen window which was a treat. The only negative for the property would be for the ground floor bathroom. The bathroom itself is great but this bathroom has a large full length window which faces onto the lane outside the property. There is only a net curtain at this window which for our group made this room unusable. There was a constant stream of walkers going past this window. If you like privacy this is not the bathroom for you! We wouldn't hesitate in booking this property again.

Lovely property in a lovely location

Verified Up Front Reviews
6 of us stayed at Wynyard Mill for a weekend. The property was immaculately clean, beautifully furnished and in a great location (a 3 minute walk from the centre of Malmsbury). Despite the weather being bitterly cold we were snug and warm and we particularly liked the underfloor heating on the ground floor when it came to drying our walking gear in the boot room. Fully equipped kitchen/diner with plenty of seating and a lovely view. Comfortable beds and plenty of wardrobe space. Will definitely be going back for another weekend. My only comment is that it would have been nice to have a slightly later check-out as 10am seems very early when check-in isn't until 4pm.

Weekend stay at Wynard Mill

Weekend stay with family, lovely property to celebrate a special occasion and explore the local area. Good booking process and information before arrival. Easy to find (even in the dark) with good parking. The property exceeded our expectations, very spacious, lovely comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, log burner in the living room with sounds of the water and amazing hidden garden. Only niggle was the temperature of the hot water in the lower bathroom but we may have missed something on the heating instructions. Great property, would go back. Helpful property manager, Dawn, during our stay, thank you.

Wynyard Mill exceeded our expectations. The property is beautiful and so much more space than we expected. It’s perfectly located with all amenities at your doorstep but with a sense of seclusion- the garden goes on and on! It’s really well equipped and the housekeeping team clearly pays attention to detail as it was beautifully presented on arrival. We’ll definitely be returning again!

We had a wonderful time at Wynyard Mill. We cannot fault the location or accommodation. The garden is also very deceiving initially offering a tranquil escape until opening into a vast space. What make this even more special - is while you are just a short stroll from the heart of malmesbury all the eye can see is green and shrubbery, a truly fantastic area. Malmesbury was also excellent with a great array of eateries along with being a central base for exploring other areas. We highly recommend this property and hope to return in the near future.
