The Hayloft is a stunning, three-bedroom Cotswold barn that’s oozes original, 1880’s characteristics and charm that are perfectly combined with the highest standard of 21st century amenities and furnishings. Once the actual hayloft to Postlip House, one of the grandest private homes in the Winchcombe area, this fabulous barn has been cleverly converted into a sumptuous holiday home with a breath-takingly gorgeous ensuite master bedroom, two luxury shower rooms, a fantastic open-plan kitchen and entertaining area and a superb patio with dining, relaxing and children’s play areas. The Hayloft is perfectly located to explore the historic town of Winchcombe and the north Cotswolds and enjoy the famously good walking in the area.

Overview

As you drive through the entrance gates to Postlip House Cottages and up the tarmac drive to the gravel courtyard you’ll immediately feel that you have arrived somewhere exclusive and very special. The Hayloft sits independently, to one side of its parent property, separated by the original hayloft courtyard, and across another wide gravel courtyard from its sister holiday rentals, The Paddock Cottage and The Chestnut Cottage. The Hayloft is tucked away in the folds of the Cotswolds hills yet just a mile from historic Winchcombe, home of Sudeley Castle and Gardens.

The owners have lavished great care and attention on the Hayloft’s interior, renovating it throughout to present a luxury holiday home that combines the original features of exposed timbers, stone walls, and doors, with contemporary furniture, art and amenities - all drawn together with a soothing palette of white walls, wooden flooring and soft natural greens and earthy tones in the fabrics and furnishings. The Hayloft has three double bedrooms, one off-set from the others with its own ensuite shower room (and an in-bedroom, freestanding bath), and a family shower room. Though the master bedroom is a showstopper, the beautiful, open-plan kitchen, which flows through to the dining and living area, will be the main attraction for guests, providing a spacious yet cosy and inviting cooking, dining and entertaining area.

Immediately outside the Hayloft is a large, secluded patio, overlooked by trees and bordered by a quiet corner of Postlip House’s rear garden. The patio has a dining area furnished with a large, rectangular dining table, six chairs and a cantilever parasol, and a charcoal BBQ that can easily cater for a six-guest feast. On the far side of the patio are two rattan-style sofas, armchairs and a drinks table. On the upper level, immediately inside the main entry gate, there’s a children’s play area with a wooden swing set and slide on an artificial grass surface. The owner has rescue chickens, who live beyond the Hayloft’s patio. If they have been laying, you’ll be able purchase delicious fresh eggs from the Egg honesty box located in the main courtyard.

Ground Floor

Head up eight original, stone steps and through the front door into the magnificent open-plan kitchen-dining area and living room, with its original, exposed timbers and stone walls.

Entrance:
Immediately through the front door is an entrance area with a handy boot rack, coat hooks and a couple of umbrellas.

Bedroom One:
Open a door to the right of the entrance and head into a dressing area that leads to the fabulous master bedroom and its ensuite shower room. The triple aspect bedroom features the exposed timbers of the hayloft’s original A-frame and vertical posts, which frame the original exposed brick end wall. Within the bedroom is a delightful treat: a freestanding, clawfoot bath with a banquet seat next to it and a heated towel rail at hand to keep towels and robes warm and dry. The bedroom is furnished with a super king-size bed on a super-sized rug over a wooden floor, with bedside tables and reading lights and a full-length mirror. A window seat provides a delightful place to perch and enjoy the view down to the original hayloft’s hay lifting mechanism. The dressing area has inbuilt drawers and a wardrobe, plus a second cupboard for household cleaning equipment.

Ensuite Shower Room:
A sliding door opens to reveal striking, Edwardian-style floor tiles that are perfectly complemented by the royal green shower tiles. The shower room has a walk-in shower with a rainfall shower head, a wash basin with a hand-built vanity unit, a toilet and a heated towel rail.

Kitchen:
The spacious and light kitchen has every appliance needed for a self-catering stay, whether you want to prepare something simple or cook a three-course celebratory meal. The kitchen’s design includes plenty of preparation surfaces, an oven, a five-ring hob, a dishwasher, a central granite-topped island with storage baskets and a double butler’s sink (one with an Insinkerator for all food waste), positioned under a window looking out to the courtyard and the neighbouring properties of The Chestnut and The Paddock Cottage. To one side, tucked under the eaves and concealed within matching kitchen units are the laundry appliances, with a drinks and cocktail preparation area on top. A line of units between the kitchen and the dining and living area, creates a visual partition while keeping the area connected, creating a fabulously spacious socialising area.

Dining Area:
The dining area features a unique, upcycled, rectangular dining table with a parquet inlay, and six super comfy dining chairs. French windows behind the table open to a Juliette balcony, which looks out to the original hayloft’s winch and the rear of beautiful Postlip House.

Living Area:
The gorgeous living area is furnished with a six-seater, bronze-green, velvet, chaise sofa, with an upcycled coffee table, set up for guests to relax and view the Smart TV. Stylish floor lamps provide soft lighting to unwind with a book or simply stretch out while the chef of the group gets busy in the kitchen.

At the far end of the open plan living space is a door that opens to two steps down to two double bedrooms and the family shower room.

Bedroom Two:
This cosy bedroom is furnished with a standard-size double bed, with bedside tables and reading lamps, a dressing table with a mirror, lamp and stool (not shown) and a tall chest of drawers all on a deep pile, grey carpet. There are three decorative hooks on the wall for hanging your clothes. The window provides a view across the courtyard to neighbouring Paddock and Chestnut Cottages and the countryside beyond.

Bedroom Three:
At the far end of the property, this large twin bedroom is furnished with two single (2’6”) beds, which can be made up as a king-size bed on request, with bedside tables and reading lamps. The room has plenty of space for younger guests to relax in, for a couple to set up a travel cot or grandparents to retreat to for some quiet time. The dual aspect affords views across the courtyard and on to the woods beyond, while the stunning blue, woodland wallpaper provides a beautiful backdrop behind the beds. The bedroom has a dressing table with a touch light make-up mirror and two double wardrobes, and a cosy deep pile, grey carpet.

Family Shower Room:
This luxury family shower room features a walk-in shower with a large, round shower head and grey tiles, a wash basin with a vanity unit and mirror above, a toilet and a heated towel rail - all surrounded by stylish cream-coloured tiles.

Outside

The Hayloft has a fabulous outside entertaining and play area directly outside the front door, which is bordered by a hip-height wooden fence that separates it from a quiet area of Postlip House’s gardens. It includes a wide patio with a dining area furnished with a large, rectangular dining table, six chairs and a cantilever parasol, and a charcoal BBQ that easily cooks enough food for six guests. To the far side of the patio is an area for relaxing with two rattan-style sofas, armchairs and a drinks table. On the upper level, immediately inside the main entry gate from the gravel courtyard, is a children’s play area with a wooden swing set and slide positioned on artificial grass. Please respect all gates signposted ‘Private’.

Perfect for a Cotswolds Escape

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had a wonderful long weekend at The Hayloft (3 couples - 6 adults) and were lucky with the weather for most of our stay in October. It was an easy walk into Winchcombe which is a lovely village and had all the amenities we needed including a great bakery and even better pubs/restaurants. The Hayloft itself is a beautiful property which is comfortable and well equipped - the owners have pretty much thought of everything that would be needed. There was plenty of space for all of us and the beautiful bath in the main bedroom was heavenly especially after a full day of walking. There are plenty of great walks on the doorstep and it was also fairly easy to get to other more well known villages by car such as Bourton on Water and Moreton in Marsh, etc. We also enjoyed some delicious eggs from the neighbours chickens! We would definitely recommend this property as an ideal base for a Cotswolds escape and wouldn't hesitate to book again.

Home away from Home

The Hayloft is a lovely rental cottage with designer details and loads of charm. It's plenty big for 6 adults or a family with kids. The kitchen was very well equipped and we easily prepared simple meals. Fresh farm eggs are available for purchase in an honesty box. Having a washer and dryer and the quiet and very private outdoor patio was a huge plus for longer stays. There's quick access to hiking trails nearby and we it is very walkable to Winchcombe where they have excellent restaurants. We would definitely stay here again in the future. If I had one suggestion or recommendation it would be to provide a larger coffee pot so all the guests could get a cup in the morning instead of having to take turns making 2 cups at a time. Top notch rental!

Beautifully restored period building to a modern luxury standard. Comfortable and quiet, clean and spacious enough for two families. Thanks

Verified Up Front Reviews
Hi, The Hayloft was fabulous, really special and felt very homely whilst also having that luxury feel to it. The only comment I have is that for the price it would have been nice to have a bit more of a welcome pack (maybe some nice eggs from those fab hens), some bread perhaps? It was very much appreciated that milk and Prosecco were left as well as the coffee/tea bits and bobs. Maybe some butter or olive oil too? Also, shower gel/shampoo/conditioner ? These are added extras that can really go a long way in the customer experience and it means you don't have to bring everything with you. I think price wise and comparing to other similar places we've stayed these extras really were useful. Other than that it was perfect and we do hope to return soon. We have already recommended to friends and family ! Many thanks again, lovely stay Fiona and Mark

Excellent Family Retreat

Verified Up Front Reviews
Our stay from start to finish was hassle free. Booking with Bolthole Retreats was so easy, their staff are friendly and approachable. They were very knowledgeable about the properties and the area. This helped us to narrow down our selection to three! Their confirmation of your booking is online and includes all the information you could want or need, plus they offer discounts into many of the attractions in the Cotswolds. Ideal if you are a family to help keep the costs down! The Hayloft itself has absolutely everything you could want or need - a true home from home. We didn't find ourselves looking for, or needing anything. The hosts are responsive and delightful. The set up of the Hayloft means it is basically almost on one level, just two steps down to two bedrooms and a bathroom, with the third bedroom and ensuite being off to the side of the kitchen and on the same level. The property is ideal for multi-generational families too. The garden is secure and fenced, with a small play area of a slide and two swings. Kept the grandchildren happy for hours! We enjoyed listening to the chickens further up the garden and even took some fresh laid eggs home! To sum up a great hassle free holiday and the weather was superb too!

Ann England

The property was everything and more, we visited with our parents and daughter and we had the best 4 night stay over bank holiday weekend. The grounds are absolutely stunning and the property itself was immaculate with the most incredible outdoor area, which we were fortunate enough with the weather to be able to have every meal outside. I would highly recommend this property if you are a small group looking for a relaxing get away from the hustle and bustle of life.

From the second you walk in , to the moment you leave you feel as if you are totally and utterly immersed in a beautiful building that exudes history , but is as modern as it could be without going over the top , and it’s the little details that count - cocktail maker kit!!! Wow!!! We could not fault the cleanliness, the super quality of the bedding / towels and the welcome bottle of fizz was a great touch !!!!

Great place to stay with a few negatives from our experience

Verified Up Front Reviews
Positives were booking experience, location, presentation and overall comfort of the Hayloft. We especially loved the outside space. Negatives were there was no heating for the first 24 hours and no alternative offered. We reported this shortly after arrival when all our attempts to follow the instructions failed. We were told to contact the next morning if the heating continued to fail and the two messages left were not picked up till late afternoon so the heating wasn’t fixed till that evening. It made the first evening and morning uncomfortably cold. There was also a continuing leak in the Master Bedroom en-suite that we reported twice. Whilst the kitchen was well stocked, we would suggest scissors and oven gloves are essentials that were missing

Thank you for a great 4 nights. We loved the Hayloft everything was immaculate looks a little bigger than the photos and was a great base for trips to Sudeley, Ross on Wye, Symonds Yat and Cotswold Wildlife Park. Our girls loved the play equipment and spent every morning in the garden. The eggs are 5*! We will return next year. Thanks again

An excellent place for a long weekend break

Verified Up Front Reviews
We found The Hayloft to be well laid-out and well equipped, very pleasantly situated in a convenient location. The outside seating area was great and we were lucky that the weather enabled us to make good use of it. There was plenty to see and do in the locality and enjoyable walking. Winchcombe made a good base as it is a proper (small) town, not a picture-postcard tourist trap.

We really enjoyed our time in the Hayloft. Beautifully presented, with high quality fixtures and fittings. The beds were really comfortable with sumptuous linen and towels. The Hayloft at Bolthole Retreats was such an incredibly lovely property to stay during a friend's wedding in the Cotswalds. It is kept up very nicely with clearly updated amenities. This particular cottage would be perfect for a family with young children as it even has a great yard space with a play structure! The entire property was absolutely stunning and just a short walk into town. I highly recommend it!

Our Stay at the Hayloft Celebrating Our 50th's

What a wonderful stay at the Hayloft! The property was of very high standard. A real luxury stay from the decor, furnishings to amenities and comfort. Location was ideal and we popped into Winchcombe to browse around the shops, have tea and cake, visit the Castle and museum was well worth a visit to see the meteorite that landed in 2021! We ate at Michelin star restaurant 'Five' on the High Street which was second to none! The chef and staff went above and beyond to make our experience very special and the food was exquisite!

Fantastic weekend stay at The Hayloft

Verified Up Front Reviews
Superb weekend family break at this stunning property minutes from Winchcombe High Street. Set behind private gates, this quirky ‘loft’ was spotlessly clean on arrival with top end fixtures, fittings and appliances throughout. Lovely garden patio/play area if you stay here during the summer as well, too cold for us at the start of March unfortunately! Pleased to say no negatives at all, but worth noting it is somewhere you need to drive to/from each time you go out, it’s close to Winchcombe but too far to walk (for us anyway!) Great base to explore Cotswolds, 30-35 minutes max from all the popular towns. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a stay here.

Family weekend away

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had a fabulous time at the Hayloft. Well equipped and nicely designed space. Beautifully appointed and in a lovely countryside setting. Only a couple of little negatives to note: Some of the party did find the sofa a little uncomfortable - as the cushions are angled down making it feel as if you are going to slide off. For the cost of the stay we were expecting a few more essentials to be provided such as shampoo, shower gel, more kitchen towel etc. More than one set of cutlery and crockery would be recommended, especially when only two dishwasher tablets were left for our use. As a party of 6 who like to cook and entertain it was challenging. The pepper mill was empty and the milk element of the coffee machine did not work. Niggles aside we would certainly return!
