Overview
Flanked by natural woodland on the edge of the spectacular Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, Lodge Barn lies at the end of the private drive, on a quiet lane just a short walk from the village. The location gives the best of both worlds with plenty of natural attractions close by including Symonds Yat, but also easy access to urban treasures such as Cheltenham Spa, Bath, and Bristol.
This long, rustic barn conversion reveals a wealth of living and sleeping space, ensuring plenty of room for all. The ground floor encompasses a charming kitchen-diner, a welcoming living room and a snooker room with a full-size snooker table along with five ensuite bedrooms in a separate wing. Upstairs are four further bedrooms, including a delightful master suite and a family bathroom. Across the courtyard, in what would once have been the stables is an external games room with a small pool table, table tennis and magnetic darts. It’s the perfect place to retreat on rainy days, and for entertaining younger guests.
Lodge Barn has a large, enclosed rear garden with views of unspoilt woodland in one direction and distant vistas of the River Seven in the other. The huge expanse of lawn is wonderful for garden games or picnics, whilst the patio with wooden outdoor furniture is a place for alfresco meals and soaking up the sunshine. Tucked away at the end of the games room is the private 6 seater hot tub. The lodge also benefits from a fully enclosed courtyard, which lies between the games room and the main barn.
Ground Floor
Entrance Hall:
The front door leads into an entrance hall with space to hang coats and leave shoes.
Utility Room:
Off the entrance hall, this handy room is where you’ll find a washing machine and tumble dryer plus ironing facilities. There is also a wine fridge, freeing up space in the main kitchen fridge.
To the rear is a ground-floor cloakroom with a WC and hand basin.
Living Room:
This impressively spacious room is filled with character featuring exposed stone walls, wooden floors and a large wood-burning stove that takes centre stage. There’s plenty of seating with a large corner sofa and a comfy three-seater sofa, plus occasional chairs. Spend cosy evenings by the fire, enjoy a movie night on the Smart TV or during the summer months, throw open the doors to the garden and let the outside in. For those who enjoy a board game or two, there’s a selection in the wooden sideboard.
Kitchen/Diner:
Warmed by the large AGA and underfloor heating, this generous room is welcoming and sociable and well-equipped for large gatherings. Exposed stone walls and wooden floors give a traditional country feel and add plenty of character. The two long tables can be placed together or separately, seating up to 18 guests comfortably, there are two dishwashers, plenty of crockery and glasses, and in addition to the AGA, there is a range-style cooker so cooking up a feast is a breeze. The central island ensures there is ample preparation space. Doors to the rear courtyard (four steps down) and to the front ensure you can let plenty of fresh air in.
External Games Room:
Go down the four steps from the back kitchen door and cross the courtyard to the former stables, which are now an external games room. Inside you’ll find a small pool table, ideal for younger guests, along with table tennis and a magnetic dartboard. There’s also a selection of outdoor games too. At the far end is a bathroom with two toilet cubicles. Please note this external room is not heated.
Snooker Room:
The vaulted ceiling and original beams give a timeless and characterful air to this expansive and elegantly furnished room. At one end there is a six-seater corner sofa and a large Smart TV and a DVD player (please bring your own DVDs). At the other end is a full-size snooker table and a traditional scoreboard. Balls, cues, and rest are provided, we ask that you please do not let children play on the table.
From the snooker room, there are doors into a wing of the barn which houses the five ground-floor bedrooms. Each of these bedrooms has an ensuite shower room with a step-in shower cubicle, WC, hand basin, mirror, and shaver point.
Bedroom One:
Decorated in calming shades of grey and white this king-size bedroom looks out over the front of the barn. It’s a spacious and peaceful room and storage comes in the form of a large antique chest of drawers. There are also bedside tables with reading lamps.
Bedroom Two:
This second king-size room is a spacious place to retreat to after a day of exploring and offers peaceful views over the rear garden. There are bedside tables with reading lamps on either side of the bed, a single wardrobe, and an antique chest of drawers.
Bedroom Three:
Bedroom three is a king-size room with views over the rear of the barn to the woods beyond. There’s a wardrobe so you can unpack properly, bedside tables with reading lamps and an occasional chair.
Bedroom Four:
With a king-size bed and views out over the rear garden, this is another restful room, where you’re bound to get a good night’s sleep after a busy day of activity. There’s an occasional chair beneath the window, bedside tables, and a wardrobe.
Bedroom Five:
The last of the ground floor bedrooms is a comfortable twin room, which looks out over the front drive. There is an antique chest of drawers for storage, bedside tables, and an unusual mirror table.
First Floor
Wooden stairs lead from the dining area to the first floor. The bedrooms on the first floor are in the oldest part of the barn. A hallway runs the length of the first floor, and there is one step up to bedrooms eight and nine.
Bedroom Six:
This is a cosy twin room with bedside tables with reading lamps and a wooden dressing table with drawers and a mirror. The high ceilings and beams are a nod to the heritage of the barn. A roof light lets in natural daylight.
Bedroom Seven:
The seventh bedroom is another twin room at the end of the house, with a low window overlooking the side. A bedside table with a lamp is placed between the two beds and there is a wardrobe, an occasional chair, and a full-length mirror.
Bathroom:
The family bathroom features a traditional clawfoot bath, where you can easily soak away the cares of the day in a tub full of bubbles. There’s also a handbasin with a wall mirror above, a rattan chair and a WC. The original tiny windows of the barn have clever shades for privacy.
Bedroom Eight:
This bedroom features a double bed, high ceilings and beams, a roof light for natural daylight and original barn windows with views out to the woodland beyond. There is a wooden dressing table and a TV with Freeview.
Bedroom Nine:
Last but by no means least, this impressive room is the one everyone will be drawing straws for! Floor-to-ceiling windows dominate the room, framing beautiful woodland views. The high vaulted ceiling is criss-crossed by exposed wooden roof struts, which sit above a wooden super-king bed. Antique side tables with reading lamps are placed on either side of the bed, there’s a double wardrobe and a button-back occasional chair.
Ensuite:
The ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom features a step-in shower cubicle, WC and a handbasin with a mirror above it.
Outside
Lodge Barn has the most fabulous garden space for guests to enjoy with a huge, enclosed lawn (small dogs should be supervised as they may be able to wriggle under the fence or gates) offering views to the woodland beyond. It’s a perfect place for garden games, where little ones can run around to their heart’s content and for epic picnics. There’s a patio area with wooden tables and benches, and a charcoal barbecue (please bring your own charcoal). Tucked in at one end of the barn is a bubbling 6-seater hot tub*, where you can relax after a day walking through the forest, and with little light pollution in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, this a wonderful spot for stargazing. We had a fabulous family weekend at lodge barn with family aged 6 - 92. Fabulous to have a large table to all sit round in the kitchen, ample equipment to cater for yourselves. Beds so comfortable and a lovely large lounge to all sit together, yet other rooms to escape to if wanted. Snooker table a big hit with all ages. Lovely enclosed garden and walks from the house in search of the wild boar you can hear.
Highly recommend.

Our stay was amazing, The property was stunning. we had a group of 16 that all were so happy with their stay. There are a lot of sights to take in and the local restaurants had some of the best food we've had.

Nice stay at Lodge Barn

Group of 15 adults and 3 children
We had a nice stay at Lodge Barn which is a lovely, well equipped space.
The games room is brilliant, we used it a lot. We loved that there was enpigh space for everyone to spread out and do their own thing.
The ourdoors space is also fantastic.
The kitchen was well equipped, although for a grouo our size who had all meals in the house, we could have done with an additional fridge.
The beds were comfortable and bathrooms had everything we needed.
Slightly earlier check in and later check out would have been ideal. We do a family break every year and this is the first one where we found the check in time a bit late and check out time a bit early for a group our size.
Overall, we would recommend the house. It has everything you need for a lovely break.

A decent stay at Lodge Barn

Overall, a decent stay at Lodge Farm.
Great overall indoor and outdoor space and private enough for a small family gathering. Shower and bedroom availability were, overall, great.
Beds were very soft and uncomfortable and the venue could do with an additional fridge and a deeper clean.

A celebratory family occasion- eighteen of us ages ranging from 18 months to 70 and this was the perfect property and location. We were so lucky to have dry weather and spent the majority of our time outside with so much room, at one point there was badminton, mini football and paddling pool fun all happening at the same time. As a grandparent, it was a joy just to sit and watch ( with a glass of wine). The BBQ worked well and loved the seating area. Everything you needed was available in the house, the kitchen was well stocked and the men were happy when they found the little chiller fridge for the beer in the utility room. Lots of bathrooms are essential with five children under four. We all had a fabulous time, well worth the money, thank you.

We had a lovely family gathering of 15 for a long weekend. The house is really big, with more than enough space inside, and a great, big garden. It was definitely worth paying the extra for the hot tub, as we were blessed with lovely weather.
Laura
Lovely property in lovely surroundings, perfect for large group

We had a fabulous 3 night stay, a family celebration for 14 adults and one child and one small dog (my parent's 60th Wedding Anniversary). Plenty of room to either spread out in different rooms or indeed sit together in one room without feeling cramped. The snooker table was well used by many members of the group. The kitchen was well equipped, lots of plates, cups, glasses and the 2 dishwashers was really useful. The fridge was ample big enough even though we had brought most of our food for the whole weekend with us. We loved that we could all sit around the kitchen table together.
We were lucky with the weather for early March and was able to spend some time sat outside in the sunshine enjoying the surrounding countryside/woodland views. A lovely peaceful retreat.
Bed were comfy and the bedrooms of a good size generally.
Some of the outside of the building looked as if it needed a bit of attention - only a paint or good clean (really minor observation), but inside the property was in great condition.

Half Term family holiday

We were all absolutely delighted with Lodge Barn and surrounding countryside.
Plenty of space and ideal for all ages.
Any queries we had were dealt with immediately.
Our only negative. We felt for the size of the property and the extra charge incurred for 4 days the hot tub was very expensive.

Weekend Celebrations with Family & Friends

The house was beautiful with plenty of room for everyone, it was very warm & cosy except one bedroom at the end of the upper floor, there was a huge wood burner in the lounge & a decent sized table for us all to sit around for food, drinks or just a chat, a couple of the guests that had downstairs rooms mentioned they had an issue with their showers, they were unable to keep the shower head in its cradle on the wall, there were plenty of rooms for adults & kids to enjoy & the hot tub was a success with us all, we had three small dogs that were able to get out of the enclosed garden which was a shame, overall a lovely place just a few things that maybe need to be looked at.

Fantastic large family break

We loved Lodge Barn, so much space for everyone.
Lovely big kitchen where we could all eat together, plenty of everything in the kitchen pots, pans, plates and cutlery. " dishwashers 2 double ovens and a very large fridge.
The rooms were all spotlessly clean and the linen and towels fresh.
The layout of the barn means that there is space to all be together but also separate areas for those that want a bit of peace.
The hot tub was all ready for us and easy to operate.
We had a minor plumbing issue quite late at night but this was sorted first thing the next morning with a visit from the plumber. Response from the host was very prompt and plenty of support on offer to sort any inconvenience.
The WiFi worked very well in all areas of the property.
We would definitely stay here again if in the area with a large group.

Lodge Barn review

Lodge Barn is an excellent property for a large group with children.
My only criticisms are that none of the courtyard outdoor lights were working which was not ideal when walking across to the hot tub.
One of the dishwashers had a severe leak and was essential for a large group. This resulted in a lot of extra washing up.
The snooker table was badly torn in several places and the games room was very cold and really only suitable for young children.
Despite these issues we had a wonderful weekend.
Mark Terry
We were already excited to stay at this property, and upon arrival the property exceeded expectations. Beautiful location.
Emma
Brilliant property for 16 of us. The hot tub and pool table were great additions. We had a meal brought in (by Harts Barn Cookery School - I highly recommend them as well) on the Saturday night. The dining area easily accommodated all 16 of us (and three dogs and a baby). Great to have so many of the bedrooms en-suite. Lovely walks nearby from the Lodge. A great stay all round !
Tim
Very enjoyable repeat visit

We enjoy regular and enjoyable family gatherings at Lodge Barn. It is perfect in every way other than the single beds are not very comfortable, but we get round this by bringing our own mattress toppers.

Family celebration

We were celbrating our 50th wedding anniversay, with a total of 14 adults, 4 children and 2 small dogs. The family is scattered between Aberdeenshire, Singapore and the South of England. Barn Lodge was an ideal place for us all, the 2 large lounges meant we oldies could have a quiet area, while the children children could play noisily. Two dishwashers made clearing up easy and we made use of a recommended chef one evening (El Toro) and the Globe one lunchtime. Both were excellent. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed exploring locally.Barn Lodge was a perfect venue for us.

Beautiful barn in a great location

We stayed as a group of 18 and had the most fantastic time. The games room, large lounge and kitchen made for great entertainment areas, and the bedrooms most with en suites were well decorated. The barn was immaculate and so well located. Would definitely recommend a stay!

70th birthday party!

Very well stocked kitchen and comfortable rooms throughout. Overall, a very happy, enjoyable stay.
Only suggestion would be to improve on arrangements for re-cycling. Being a large group we generated a sizeable amount of rubbish but the instructions in the guide were not very clear on what should go where -insufficient bags provided.

great place for a gathering of mixed ages

Lodge Barn provided us with very nice, welcoming accommodation, in a great location. The house is laid out so that everyone can comfortably gather in the kitchen and living rooms, but it is also easy to find quiet spaces. The grounds and surrounding woods provide a peaceful and pretty outlook. Plenty of parking. Nice garden furniture. Good bedrooms. Plenty of shower rooms. Games room and outer barn well equipped for kids of all ages. Garden safe for children and dogs. The house is nicely decorated and the kitchen well-equipped (lovely AGA) although one of the dishwashers wasn't working, the knives weren't sharp enough for the 'chefs' and we could have done with another fridge. Other details good though e.g. some plug-in heaters that could be moved to different rooms as required. (Take a torch if you're planning to use the hot tub after dark.) Would definitely return and happy to recommend.

Stay at lodge barn

Stayed to celebrate daughters 40th with all my family for 4 nights . Unfortunately one bedroom had a very strong damp unpleasant smell coming from the en-suite .Someone came to sort the issue out leaving the windows open . This room wasnt used which was a shame . The house is very large with everything you could ask for to keep the family happy. The kitchen is very well equipped and table brilliant to sit everyone . The hot tub was used every day . My daughter had the main bedroom and was amazed with the view. The lawn was used for rounders and other outside games .At the end of our stay no one wanted to go home . Highly recommend for a large family get together

Another great holiday through bolthole retreats.

The booking was easy to make with excellent communication from Bolthole retreats. We were able to find the property easily and it met our needs perfectly. The property had lots of amenities that are family friendly; large enclosed garden, games room, hot tub. The amount of properties and range of sizes gave us lots of options to choose but all exceptional quality, and Lodge Barn is exceptional. We will definitely property/,company again. Arears to develop - bathroom fan in first ground floor bedroom needs servicing, could be useful to put flagstones across the whole of the patio rather than some stone chips, but these are tiny tweaks to a wonderful stay. Thank you!

Lodge Barn

Lodge Barn looks beautiful but the downstairs bedrooms smell musty, there are mice living in the kitchen and wasps nesting in the wall by the kitchen door . There were mouse droppings in the cupboard under the sink which we didnt find until part way through our holiday. We then found some on the worktop. We tried to contact Tracey but there was no answer. I left a voicemail but still nothing from her.I tried ringing again the next morning but still no answer! Very poor customer service and care. Lodge Barn is not a cheap holiday rental and I didnt expect to be sharing it with mice.

A great long weekend in the Forest of Dean

A perfect house for a large family gathering. Plenty to keep children of all ages happy with games and small ride on toys.
Kitchen well equipped for our party of 17 and table in the kitchen allowed us to all eat together.. The garden was extremely safe and had lovely views. The nearest pub was good for a Sunday carvery but was too far to walk down a rather dangerous lane with small children.
Our only complaint was a lack of facility in our bedroom on the ground floor to unpack our clothes....no chest of drawers or wardrobe....just a few hangers on coat hooks. The beds were very comfortable.overall we had a fantastic weekend and thank Tracy for her helpful correspondence with us concerning arrival time

Lovely place

Lodge Barn is a great place for a big bunch of friends to get together, it's plenty big enough and generally well furnished and equipped. There were a few small gripes, no sharp knives for example, but we'd happily use it again.

Great whole Family weekend Celebration

Lodge Barn was absolutely ideal for our surprise Birthday weekend for the whole Family.
There was plenty of space for everyone with 2 very large reception rooms and Huge kitchen diner.
Very large secure garden for the 4 dogs to enjoy the weekend as well.
The bedrooms in the barn area were to me very corporate like rooms
The Master suite was lovely except the hinges on the ensuite would wake the dead when moved(now oiled and silent!)
There were several cob webs in the ensuite roof window which were at an easily accessible height to be cleaned.
I appreciate it an old building but in places needs some loving care and attention
Would I stay again
yes.
We had a wonderful weekend at Lodge Barn for my wifes Birthday surprise

Fabulous stay!

The property is fabulous. As a group of 18 ladies, we had more than enough space to feel comfortable without tripping over each other. The accommodation is huge! Both living rooms are well furnished along with the kitchen being large enough for everyone to sit and eat meals together. All of the bedrooms were well decorated and the beds were extremely comfy. One of the best things was the garden. We played a lot of garden games so having a large space was brilliant for us. I would definitely stay here again.

Lovely place for a family reunion

Lovely accommodation with plenty of room for everyone to get together and relax. Tesco superstore just down the road and plenty of take aways, and lots of places nearby to visit.

A short break with friends

Beautiful property in a beautiful location. We had lovely weather which enhanced the stay although there was plenty to do inside as well.
Had a slight issue with electric sockets in the kitchen but resolved quickly. Also struggled to get a signal on TV but werent watching much. We could access BBC I player.
All in all a very pleasant stay. Would highly recommend the property and the area.

Lovely weekend away

We had a lovely stay at Lodge Barn with my extended family and in-laws. It was very clean on arrival and there was plenty of space for everyone. The beds were comfortable, good shower pressure and a really nice balance of modern and farmhouse. The location was perfect for walking our dogs and it was a good centre point for day trips out via the car. Some things I would note would be that the oven wasn't particularly strong or large so we didn't manage to get everything in the oven for dinner (just something to think about when cooking for so many people). Perhaps if you are familiar cooking with an Aga then there won't be a problem but this was new to us so we didn't use it. As well, the house felt quite cold in certain areas (upstairs bedrooms) although electric heaters were provided so this was easily rectified.
Otherwise, good value for money and would recommend.

70th birthday party

We booked the barn through Bolthole Retreats for a 70th birthday party and it proved to be the perfect venue for a large family gathering of mixed ages. It has loads of living space, very comfortable bedrooms and plenty to amuse the younger ones. Unfortunately, the kitchen Aga wasn't working, which made it chilly in the mornings. When we rang to enquire, we were told an engineer had been booked to fix it on the day we left. It's a shame we weren't told this before arrival.
If you are going walking or running be prepared for some steep climbs.

Lovely weekend stay in the countryside

Great place for a big group with plenty of bathrooms and big sociable areas. Lovely and warm. Great walks from the door and lovely local pubs. Games room was freezing so we couldnt use it which was a shame. Overall a great stay

Perfect place for my 70th birthday celebration

House was perfect for us to celebrate birthday with ages from 2 to 70. Very clean and all bedrooms comfortable. The 2 lounge areas were excellent for mixed ages to relax and watch TV or play on the snooker/ pool table.
Kitchen very well equipped with everything we needed for family breakfast and celebration dinner. Great location for visiting local areas like Chepstow and Tintern.
Overall a lovely place which made our trip extra special.
One very small negative, the games room could do with updating, pool table particularly.

Booth Family Holiday

The review - does anyone want to add or change anything?
Lodge Barn was ideal for our family, with plenty of bedrooms and numerous en-suites which were very welcome and afforded multiple families some privacy. The room with the pool table was used during the day and evening. It was an ideal area for the childrens games console - the adults socialised here too. The kitchen was well stocked. The large fridge was fantastic plus two dishwashers. The BBQs on the patio area meant we could enjoy an outdoor meal on a sunny evening. We visited the Taurus Craft Centre, Chepstow Castle and some of us went fishing. The local Tesco was less than 10 minutes drive.
We found Lodge Barn to be very comfortable with all the facilities we required and would recommend it for large families and groups.

An ideal location for a large group of people

An ideal location for a large group of people from multiple generations to celebrate a special occasion - and very dog friendly.
Perfect outside space for games or just lounging around.
Great kitchen and cooking facilities.
Smallish bedrooms but adeqaute. Only small gripe was lack of compostible bin liners and black sacks.
David Way
A great family holiday in a fantastic venue

We had a whole family holiday with seven siblings and their partners and found Lodge Barn to be absolutely spot on. The location is beautiful and quiet as well as being very close to all amenities. The accommodation itself is even better than described. The kitchen facilities are excellent and there is an ample supply of crockery, cutlery and glasses and we had a very generous welcome pack provided for the arrival.
The layout of the house is brilliant with the master bedroom having spectacular views and most of the bedrooms being en suite.
The facilities enabled our group to all enjoy being in the same room when we wanted- be it the lounge, kitchen or the games room and this was ideal for a wonderful on going party atmosphere during our entire stay.
