Bursting with charm, Church Cottage is tucked away down a quiet lane beside Burford’s historic church. Built of classic Cotswold stone, the cottage is full of period features and carefully preserved architectural details. Sleeping up to six, Church Cottage combines a warm, inviting atmosphere with vintage touches throughout. Just behind the house, a private walled garden and rose terrace offer a tranquil retreat, ideal for unwinding or dining alfresco in peaceful surroundings. Burford is one of the most beloved towns in the Cotswolds. Its famous High Street slopes gently down to the River Windrush, with historic houses and a mix of independent shops, galleries, tearooms, and pubs lining both sides. With its own private parking, Church Cottage is perfectly placed to enjoy everything Burford has to offer, while still providing a quiet retreat just moments from the heart of it all.

Overview

Church Cottage is a home full of character, quietly set on a peaceful lane next to Burford’s historic church. With warm Cotswold stone, a large fireplace and beams, the cottage has retained many original features that give it a real sense of historic charm.

Step inside and you’ll find a place full of personality, with vintage treasures and carefully chosen artwork throughout. The kitchen combines traditional features such as wooden worktops, a Belfast sink and an Everhot range cooker, with modern equipment to create a warm, country kitchen which you will enjoy using. In the sitting room, a wood-burning stove is set into the original brick fireplace, perfect for cosy evenings at home. French doors open onto the walled garden, letting in plenty of light and fresh air on warmer days. The dining room also looks out to the walled garden and has French doors to the raised rose terrace, ideal for relaxed meals with the scent of flowers drifting in. Upstairs, three charming bedrooms continue the cottage’s character, each styled with vintage furniture, soft linens, and thoughtful finishing touches.

You can move easily between the sitting room and dining room and the the charming, sheltered garden, which is a sun trap blooming with roses and flowering borders. Dine on the rose terrace with the church views beyond as the old clock bells ring in the hours. There are quiet spots to have your morning coffee and read a book. To the front is an off-road parking space, a rare benefit in this bustling town.

Ground Floor

Entrance hall and cloakroom
Step through the red front door into the entrance hall where you can hang up coats and put away walking boots. There is a cloakroom to one side in what was once the old privy with a basin and WC.

Kitchen
You will love cooking in this well-equipped kitchen with its Everhot range. The Belfast sink and oak wood worktops give the feel of a traditional cottage kitchen, but with everything you need hidden in cupboards below. There is a full range of plates, glasses, crockery and cooking utensils, with a Nespresso coffee machine, microwave, fridge, freezer, washing machine and a dishwasher.

Sitting Room
This cosy room is the heart of the cottage, with painted original wooden floorboards and beams, cheerful floral curtains and comfortable seating including two armchairs and a three-seater sofa. An inviting wood-burning stove sits within the original brick fireplace, framed by handmade oak bookcases. This is the perfect place to curl up next to the fire with a book in hand or settle down to watch the smart television, which can be found in the antique pine corner cupboard, along with a DVD player, Bluetooth speaker and a selection of games and puzzles. On warmer evenings, open the French doors to step out into the garden after an evening cup of tea to take in the wonderful views.

This is a delightful room where you can linger over long and leisurely meals.

First Floor

Bedroom One
The master bedroom has the best view, looking across the rose terrace to the church beyond. Open your windows on a summer evening to let in the floral breeze before snuggling into the king-size bed. Unpack into the two chests of drawers and spend a lazy morning reading a good book, perhaps one you brought with you or one from the selection in the sitting room.

Bedroom Two
Set up as a children’s bedroom, this room is sure to enchant all ages. There is a pair of comfortable full-size single beds with a large vintage pine chest of drawers between them. A captivating illustration of a rabbit family hangs above, guaranteed to delight young guests, while the original 1930s decorative fireplace and patchwork curtains all add to the appeal of this cheerful twin room.

Bedroom Three
With its soft, pastel-coloured decor and comfortable double bed, it’s hard not to feel cosy in this charming bedroom beneath the sloping ceiling. There’s plenty of space and storage, with two bedside tables with drawers, a lovely vintage pine chest of drawers, and a small hanging cupboard. This bedroom offers good views over the gardens and rooftops of old Burford.

Bathroom
The vintage aesthetic continues in the bathroom with an original 1930’s bathtub, hand-held shower, WC and basin.

Outside

Hidden behind Church Cottage is the most wonderful garden offering privacy and seclusion, a rarity for Burford cottages. The garden is in two parts, the walled garden with a lawn for children to play on, shrubs and flowering borders and the rose terrace, with gorgeous roses climbing up the sheltering walls and an apple tree as old as the house, covered with a climbing clematis. This is an idyllic place to relax, read, or listen to the church bells striking the hours. On the rose terrace outside the dining room there is a wooden dining table and six chairs. Take meals here or bring a BBQ to make the most of your time outside.

Disappointing

Verified Up Front Reviews
Adequate property in heart of Burford. Property looks beautiful externally. Inside a different story - makeover needed. Showers are inadequate for 5 adults. Lack of relevant information provided until 2 days prior to arrival e.g 1 shower could only be used as a handheld shower. Also that the property was “green” - I like my towels fluffy! Lack of generosity from owners - given a packet of biscuits, small milk and wood for 1 fire. As a comparison, the next day we arrived at a property for 2 nights - they gave us a welcome basket containing fresh bread, juice, eggs, butter, milk, biscuits, wine! Unfortunately the property was disappointing.

Gorgeous cottage in a perfect location. Church Cottage had everything we needed for a short stay, however with its fully equipped kitchen and spacious dining and sitting rooms we could easily have stayed longer!! Conveniently located just off the high street and near the church it’s perfect for a quick stroll to all that Burford has to offer. Thanks for having us.

Shona

Beautiful cottage at the bottom of a dead end. Calm but still centrally located. Enclosed garden. In walking distance of many amenities like bakery , butcher , supermarket , everything you could need is nearby. Pubs , restaurants, pharmacy etc … And the village is beautiful. Busy at day but calm at night. Loved it.

Lovely stay in Burford in a lovely property.

Awesome location, thanks. Key code was in the welcome pack. Easy to access.

Church Cottage was a lovely place to stay in Burford. We were a family of 5 (our children are in their 20's) and it was comfortable for all of us. The location was perfect and we could walk to Burford high street very easily. We enjoyed the shops and restaurants in Burford and drove to the nearby villages as well. We love the walks in the Cotswolds and this cottage was an excellent base for us.

We spent 4 nights at Church Cottage while visiting to attend a wedding. The cottage is in a great location off High Street and is well equipped for a group of up to 6 people. Beds were comfortable with nice living and dining areas. Kitchen is well equipped with all the amenities needed for our group. Parking in private driveway was a bonus as parking in Burford is challenging. Garden was a beautiful place to relax. Communication with our hosts was faultless and made for a great stay.

Life-long friends found the perfect cottage for a stay!

Verified Up Front Reviews
Three of us life-long friends made a 20+ year dream come true by staying 30 days at Church Cottage in Burford, UK, April - May, 2025. The cottage far, far exceeded our expectation!!! The online information accurately described the cottage perfectly, but seeing it in person brought its magic to the foreground. The location near the bottom of High Street was the perfect base of operation for visiting all the sights, shops, pubs and restaurants in Burford as well as the surrounding villages in the Cotswolds. The private parking space next to the entrance door was truly a blessing as public parking is at a premium. Also the ground floor water closet was so welcomed by all three of us. The ground floor had a fully stocked kitchen, dishwasher, stove, oven, microwave, and washing machine. It further had a lovely sitting room with tv, cable, and wifi and a large dining room which easily seated 8. The stairs to the upper floor were narrow; however they were carpeted and had a sturdy handrail for navigating the stairs safely. The upper floor consisted of 3 bedrooms, full bathroom with shower, and second bathroom with claw-footed tub. Everything was perfectly clean; beds were extremely comfortable. There also was a beautiful enclosed back yard and side patio with table and six chairs. Flowers and shrubs were gorgeous! The St. John Baptist church was just beyond the patio - gorgeous to see and the hourly bell chimes were delightful!! Not at all disruptive!! The owners were very friendly and extremely responsive before and during out stay. And the housekeepers when scheduled were excellent. Overall, we were delighted with our stay and would highly recommend this property.

Extended Break

Verified Up Front Reviews
We stayed for just over 3wks and a fell in love with the cottage which was ideal for our needs. Small but perfectly formed, its three bedrooms were very comfortable. The downstairs rooms worked well for us - especially the sitting room which, due to the double aspect, was as flooded with natural light all day. The French windows in both reception rooms allow a seamless link to the rear garden and side terrace. Having an on-site private parking space is a real boon in Burford. The owners were kind and helpful once our booking was confirmed, and the housekeeper brilliant during our stay. All-in-all, Church Cottage is the perfect bolthole for anyone wanting an independent stay in what we think is the best town in The Cotswolds.

A great stay in Burford

Church Cottage proved to be ideal for a comfortable and relaxing break in Burford. The cottage is perfectly located very close to the centre of Burford, but in a peaceful position away from the busy main high street and next to the impressive St John the Baptist Church. We would certainly look to return in the future.

Beautiful Cottage and Convenient Location

We enjoyed a week at Church Cottage in Burford and delighted in the cosy cottage, fantastic secluded garden and convenience to Burford High Street. Be aware of steep staircase, that was our only concern. It is located right beside St. John the Baptist Church with fascinating history and great Cafe 15 in Warwick Hall.

We stayed at Church Cottage with our children and had a wonderful time. It is very comfortable, well equipped and exceptionally well located. While within minutes from the Hill, Burford’s bustling high street, it is very quiet and the view of the church is beautiful and soothing. Burford is easily the prettiest Cotswold village and a perfect starting point for exploring the area. Our hosts were very thoughtful and provided excellent tips for places to visit and where to eat. Overall a memorable stay that we hope to repeat soon and highly recommend to anyone!

Lovely few days at Church Cottage, Burford

Verified Up Front Reviews
We stayed at Church Cottage for 3 nights at beginning of August - two children and four adults. It was a wonderful stay. When we arrived we noticed a few more wasps than normal and potentially a wasps nest on the grounds. We spoke to owners and they sorted immediately. It was good knowing that we could contact easily and that they were on top of things. Cottage very cosy and comfortable and lovely outside space. Bath is definitely made for a smaller person but there is a shower! Best bit is the location with the Church literally next door and the high street a 30 second walk away. Lovely bakery where we went every morning for fresh bread as well as lots of independent shops. Lots to do around the area - we went to Crocodiles of the World, did archery, visited lovely garden centre. All are listed in the guides left in house. Overall a wonderful stay and we were sad to leave.

Cotswolds Getaway

Verified Up Front Reviews
This is a beautiful property in the perfect location. The owners and housekeepers clearly take great pride in the property and the attention to detail with the furnishings, decorations and little extra touches was appreciated. The kitchen is very well equipped, which was good for eating at home in the evenings. My only comment would be that the property is more suited to 1 couple with children than a group of adults. We were 3 couples and struggled a bit with the configuration. We ended up all having to share the en-suite shower cubicle in the master bedroom, which wasn’t very convenient. The main bathroom only has a bathtub and the ceiling is too low to stand in the bath to shower so unless everyone is taking a bath every day it’s not really practical. The master bedroom has one good sized bed but the double in the 2nd bedroom is tiny, better suited to one person or children and the 3rd room is set up for children with 2 singles. These were big enough for adults and comfortable but better suited to kids. We enjoyed the living space very much although we struggled a bit with the central heating which we were asked not to adjust or alter but was hotter than the sun in the evenings, to the point where we had to open windows. Overall we loved the house and had a great stay. The hosts were accommodating and gave us tons of info. Thank you!
