Overview
The Forest of Dean is a much-loved destination and Bertha is a wonderfully romantic bolthole retreat. Set alongside a neighbouring shepherd’s hut you are surrounded by woodland with a lake at the foot of the hill and walking routes from the door. This is a place of peace and tranquillity, and you can't help but relax from the moment you arrive.
Wooden steps lead up to the deck and from here there is nothing to see before you but trees. Watch the sunsets, gaze at the stars, and spot the local wildlife. Inside the hut is full of character with a raised king-size bed, kitchenette, dining area, and a wood burner in the corner. The furnishing makes clever use of the space with a table and benches stowed beneath the bed. Pulling these up you can enjoy meals together and it creates additional under-bed storage space for luggage. The kitchenette has everything you need for preparing meals with a fridge with a freezer compartment, oven, and two-ring hob. As evening falls, light the wood burner and create a warming, romantic atmosphere to spend cosy nights together.
The beautiful setting of this shepherd’s hut is its calling card, and you are sure to fall in love with this part of the country. You can choose to explore the local surroundings or travel further afield into the Wye Valley with its many picturesque villages, viewpoints and landmarks. For adventurers, there are water sports to try, as well as cycling and walking in the Forest of Dean.
Ground Floor
Sleeping Area:
Set on a raised wooden base, the king-size bed will ensure an undisturbed night’s sleep. The skylight above gives a spectacular view of the starlit night sky, or you can open the blind and bathe in sunlight in the mornings. Surrounded by wood with beams above, this hut really brings the essence of the forest inside.
Living/Dining/Kitchen Area:
Cleverly stored at the end of the bed is a hidden table and benches, where you can sit together and discuss plans over breakfast prepared in the kitchenette. Despite its small size, you have an oven and two-ring hob, a fridge with a freezer compartment and the expected cooking utensils. The compact wood burner is a lovely addition for the evenings and adds an atmospheric crackle as it warms the room.
Bathroom:
At the end of the shepherd’s hut behind a wooden sliding door is the unique shower room. Here there is a traditional WC, rainfall shower and an eye-catching sink with a unique natural shape atop a wooden unit.
Outside
The raised decking to the front leads you out into the forest where you can explore walks and head down to the lake. There is also a fire pit/barbecue. A gravelled path takes you out to the parking area with space for one car where your journeys to the surrounding countryside will begin. You are in the perfect location to discover Lydney up to Ross-on-Wye and beyond.Facilities

Really enjoyed our stay, what a beautiful setting.

Great stay, the hut is more than spacious enough with everything you need. The location is amazing for the dog, whilst not enclosed area there really is a huge space around the property and the walks from the doorstep are brilliant too!

Weekend away

Would highly recommend a stay in Bertha for a peaceful time away. Lovely finishes all round and very comfortable. Coffee on the porch each morning taking in the views was definitely a highlight.

I want one!

No expense has been spared on this adorable hut. Every little detail has been thought of.
No TV but WiFi worked fine and was able to watch on my tablet.
It is completely pitch black at night unless the cottage down the hill is occupied
It's not for the faint hearted as is totally isolated and a bit of a walk from car park.
My only suggestion is to put some sort of gripperrod on the steps up because they got very slippy after the rain. Quite dangerous.

Tranquil setting in a luxurious hut

The shepherd's hut does not disappoint with a well equipped kitchen, cosy wood burning stove, comfy bed & ensuite facilities. Handy for Lydney's supermarkets and the delights of Taurus Arts or exploring further into the beautiful Forest. I had a very peaceful stay that was a perfect, restful tonic.

Beautiful Bertha

Enjoyed the beautiful location. As advertised, apart from distance from car parking for those travelling fro OS with full suitcases for weeks of travel,- rather difficult. We would have been better in Betty from this point of view.

Bertha was a lovely get away, peaceful and just as described! The cabin is beautiful and has all the necessary facilities for a short break away. It is perfect for out the door walks and provides miles of footpaths for everyone to explore. Small touches such as dog treats and cookies were much appreciated! Would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.

Just simply idillic and perfect

It was a brilliant stay- exactly what I was craving to have. The location is brilliant (Chepstow only 15 mins away for dinner etc if wanted) and lovely walks nearby. It was a lovely hut to the highest standard, very clean and everything you needed was there. Cant wait to come back.

A wonderful escape

Me and my partner had a lovely weekend break at Bertha. Such an amazing location, surrounded by the countryside. The stars are incredible here, which we gazed at while roasting marshmallows by the fire pit. They provided great recommendations if you are unfamiliar with the area, from great walks in puzzle wood to a delicious meal in the Saracens Head Inn. I would highly recommend staying here and would love to return. The cabin is perfect, with everything you need and a lovely comfy bed. A great escape to the countryside!

Amazing

Absolutely amazing shepherds hut. We loved our stay in Bertha. There is nothing negative to say. We had the most amazing chilled week, so peaceful, with just the wildlife keeping us company.
The set up of the hut itself is great and our dog loved chilling on the veranda watching the world go by (well the wildlife) or chilling inside with the door open, but all safe and sound with the gate on the veranda.
Loved it so much we will definitely be staying in Bertha again soon.

Bertha

Fantastic quiet relaxing week has been had. Shepherds hut was clean, tidy and had everything required for a comfortable week in the Forest of Dean. The location is excellent and allowed easy access to the Forest of Dean and Gloucestershire.

Blissful

We had a perfect stay in Bertha. The accomodation was well equipped with a kitchen stacked with utensils, board games onboard and a good shower too. We enjoyed some great meals on the veranda and even saw a barn owl catch their dinner.
Lovely walk through the woods to Bream.

Peace and quiet at its best.

We absolutely loved our stay at Bertha Shepherds Hut. This was our second stay in the last 5 months and I'm sure we will visit again soon. It's the best place to be if you want peace and quiet and the views are incredible. The Hut had everything we needed for a pleasant stay. The outside space was generous so seemed super private and was great for our dog. I don't think he's ever been so calm. The owners were really kind in allowing us to rebook at short notice due to a broken leg. Can't wait to go back.

Amazing weekend getaway!

We stayed at Bertha Shepherds Hut for the weekend, and everything about it was amazing. The actual hut was even better than the pictures (which already looked super cute and cosy). There was everything you needed to cook, even bakeware. The bathroom was so nicely built and modern. Even just the torchlight they had was appreciated as we did explore the forest when it was dark. The view and the greenery from the hut was really pretty, and there was a lake at the bottom of the hill when you walk into the forest. I loved it and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants a nice stay away in a peaceful, green and fresh environment! Totally worth the money.

Amazing Retreat for Two

A large, beautiful and well furnished shepherd's hut that provided the perfect getaway for my wife and I between Christmas and New Years. Gorgeous scenery and a delightful, cozy interior meant that even in the rough weather it was a pleasure to stay in. The owners went out of their way to make our experience a comfortable one.

A beautiful, peaceful stay

My partner and I stayed here for the weekend and couldnt fault our stay. Weve stayed in many shepherds hut before and this was by far the biggest and best one weve stayed in! The location was also beautiful and in good walking distance to the local village. A wonderful weekend!

Pristine location and accommodation

What a spot. The wagon is on top of a hill next to the woods which not only gives you a gorgeous view of the property but allows for numerous animals sightings whilst enjoying the comfort of the accommodation.

Perfect rural escape!

Bertha is a beautifully presented shepherds hut and is the perfect place for a rural escape. The location is unbelievable peaceful and the sunrise and sunsets are the perfect start and end to the day! The comfort and stand of the hut was first class with the welcome biscuits, tea, coffee, milk, etc the perfect finishing touch! The local pubs are also lovely for a drink and bite to eat I would definitely recommend The Globe! We will be visiting again!!

Beautiful hidden getaway

The shepherds hut is in a beautiful location tucked away on the edge of the woods. It was spacious and very clean, like it was brand new. The bathroom is lovely and bed very comfy. The firepit outside is a nice touch and there's great walks in a nearby woods in walking distance, also not a long drive to the Forest of Dean. A lovely few days retreat, would recommend to everyone and will definitely be back!
