Neolithic stone circles, white horses and sweeping downs

Castle Combe may be regarded as one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds, but Wiltshire is home to some equally enchanting places. So, if you are looking for that picture-perfect English village, without the crowds then pay a visit to Biddestone, Grittleton or Slaughterford, which despite its rather bloodthirsty name is a gloriously tranquil spot.

In the north of the county lies the town of Malmesbury. This is England’s oldest borough and is filled with history. 17th-century shops and medieval streets sit under the gaze of the 12th-century abbey. Likewise, this thriving market town often hosts music and food festivals.

Discover the incredible Salisbury cathedral, which has the tallest spire in England, and in just-over-the-border Bath. A glorious Roman city famed for its mineral springs. Stonehenge needs no introduction but don’t miss Avebury. The largest prehistoric stone circle in the world which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stonehenge.

Lastly, animal lovers can spend time at Longleat, the first safari park to open outside of Africa in 1966, it’s home to more than 120 species and it also plays an important role in wildlife conservation. Guided tours of Longleat House are also available in addition to the safari park.
