Overview
Forever captured by L S Lowry in his Burford Church painting, Farthingdales is built from the region’s distinctive honey-coloured Cotswold stone. This charming cottage sits in one of the most historic parts of Burford just away from the visiting crowds alongside the impressive St John’s Church. From your doorstep you can follow walks along the River Windrush discovering the picturesque area of the Cotswolds.
Great style and flair has made Farthingdales the stunning home it is today. While keeping its history intact the ground floor has been opened to create a spacious open plan living area with a superb inglenook fireplace and woodburning stove. Feel the original flagstone flooring beneath with exposed beams above. Touches of character are added with William Morris fabrics and playful accessories, spot the squirrel in the kitchen.
Hidden behind the cottage is a pretty garden with planted borders and a delightful summer house. A dining table lets you take your meals here and there are loungers letting you relish the warmth of the sun. When the sun lasts long into the evening, have a drink here with your guests and enjoy the church view.
Ground Floor
Entrance Hall:
Step in from Lawrence Lane through the front door, with its bright and colourful Art Deco glass panel, into the stunning open-plan kitchen-living-dining space, featuring the original flagstone floor, exposed beams, inglenook fireplaces with harmonising clay-coloured walls entwined with modern luxury.
Kitchen/Dining Area:
Immediately in front of you is the kitchen’s white, quartz-topped breakfast bar with two stylish bar stools and a unique and quirky squirrel climbing down the light flex! To the right side of the breakfast bar, in front of an original stone inglenook, is a beautiful, solid oak dining table with comfy seating for all. Alongside the table there’s a drinks station with a Nespresso machine, and a microwave above kitchen cabinets housing a fridge, freezer and washing machine.
The kitchen’s breakfast bar leads around to a fully equipped cooking and preparation area, with an oven and hob, dishwasher, wine fridge and Thomas Denby stone sink. A back door, with another colourful Art Deco glass panel, opens to the patio and garden.
Living Area:
This beautiful living area is at once stylish and cosy. It features a wood burning stove within an original inglenook fireplace, with a custom-built brass and leather fender – the perfect spot to sit and warm up on a cold winter’s night. To one side of the fireplace is a wing-back armchair and to the other a Smart TV, while a reproduction chest acts as a coffee table and store for board games. In the far corner there’s a charming, cushioned window seat – once the doorway of one of the original cottages - with books and a reading lamp. Two comfy sofas, on a woven jute rug, provide plenty of space for relaxing in front of the fire while watching the TV or reading. At the foot of the stairs is a custom-built oak hall bureau with a lamp, mirror and pretty leaf dish – the ideal place to keep keys and phones.
Bathroom:
Double, paned doors open from the dining area end of the cottage into a light and bright family bathroom, which features a full-size bath with central taps and a shower above with a rain effect shower head and hand-held shower. In addition, there is a vanity unit with a large wash basin with a touch light mirror and a shaver point to one side, a toilet, and a heated towel rail. A three-pane window (with a blind) overlooks the side courtyard. (The bathrooms doors are lockable and have tapestry curtains. These can be hung on the dining area wall to allow light through when the doors are closed, and the bathroom is not in use, or can be hooked onto the doors for privacy when using the bathroom.)
Boot Room:
Continuing through the bathroom, guests will find a handy boot room with hooks to hang coats, plenty of space to keep boots and shoes, and a butler’s sink. A delightful window seat with beautiful cushions and curtains provides the perfect spot to get ready for the outdoors or simply sit and contemplate the day ahead or the day just enjoyed. A tall cupboard houses the iron, ironing board while the vacuum is under the lift-up seat. A door leads out to garden.
First Floor
A carpeted staircase with a handrail leads up to the landing where there is a beautiful light hanging over the stairs and the famous L.S. Lowry print of Lawrence Lane on the wall.
Bedroom One:
This gorgeous bedroom has a strikingly tall ceiling and features a super king-size bed, with bedside tables and reading lamps, set against a custom-built, extra tall bedhead with William Morris fabric panels; so synonymous of the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1800s that was so strong in this area. The bedroom is also furnished with a wardrobe, chest of drawers-cum-dressing table with a large mirror above and a reclining armchair and has bedside sockets with USB points. It has a low, triple-pane window framed by sumptuous, lined curtains and a window seat where you can sit and watch the quiet life of Lawrence Lane going by below.
Bedroom Two:
The pale-mint walls, burnt orange velvet bedheads and antique, mahogany furniture give Farthingdales’ twin bedroom a richly Victorian feel. The bedroom is furnished with two single beds (2’6”), with a bedside table and two lamps (and bedside sockets with USB points), an antique dressing table with drawers and an antique wardrobe with plenty of hanging space. This bedroom also has a low, triple pane window with a window seat and beautiful, lined curtains framing this retreat within a retreat.
Family Shower Room:
The compact but fully fitted shower room features a walk-in shower with a detachable shower head and three safety handles, a washbasin with a large mirror with a touch light and LED/Bluetooth speaker, a toilet, a vanity unit with two shaver points and a heated towel rail. Look out for the gorgeous, hare robe hooks on the back of the door.
Outside
The cottage has a charming, east-west orientated garden, making it a fabulous suntrap on sunny days, which is accessed through the rear door off the kitchen or through the boot room. Cross the little gravel path and head through the gate marked with a number ‘3’ and into the patio area (where you’ll also see the outside of what was once an ancient saddlery), and then to a lawn surrounded by mature borders with a summer room at the far end. Take a seat on the garden bench and enjoy the sound of the famous church bells, eat al fresco on the patio or enjoy the outdoors, protected from the elements, wrapped up in one of the garden blankets or inside the garden room.

Arrived and cottage was either not cleaned or had been used before we got there

Arrived at the cottage at 4:00pm, went inside to be greeted by cups on the draining board, beds that had been slept in, wet towels in a towel pile bath rooms not clean. Reported to the house manager and the letting office to be told thats strange it was ticked as being cleaned. We will send someone out as soon as we can. Suggest that you go and get something to eat We had a 4 hour drive to get to Burford, and could not even have a hot drink, or shower. Imagine if we had turned up in the late evening or at night? The cottage was cleaned by time we had go back from eating some 2 hours later but there was no phone call to say it had been done. No follow up or apology from the company. We paid the best part of £1000 for our stay and it put a black cloud on the whole weekend. Oh and we never found the Hive heating contols either so its a good job the weekend was not overly cold.
In summary nice enough cottage let down by poor procedures and poor customer service follow up.

Fabulous Farthingdales

We had a wonderful few days retreat. Farthingdales had everything we could need. Excellent facilities. Cosy and comfortable.
Location was, just off the high street but close that it was so easy to pop out for provisions.
Excellent all round. Would love to come back.

Our stay at Farthingdales was outstanding. The attention to detail and stylish decor was exquisite. The place was located centrally and was easily walkable to multiple restaurants and shops in town. It was a joy to come home to each evening after a day of exploring the area. We will definitely stay longer on our next visit.

Highly recommend.

We stayed at Farthingdales last year too and will definitely be back for a third time.
Ideally situated in the lovely town of Burford and a stones throw from the busy High Street, the actual road is very quiet with a lovely church at the end of the cul-de-sac.
Burford is full of shops and eateries, and the local people are genuinely friendly which reflects onto the tourists. It has such a feel good vibe, in my opinion.
Easy to park outside the house or small car park not far away.
Also, well situated for the Cotswolds. Most other villages and tourist attractions, are not that far away.

Farthingdales was an amazingly restored medieval home in Burford. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.

Great house in great location

We were three adults staying for a week, and we had plenty of space and everything we needed. The house has a few quirks but was clean and comfortable. Kitchen is very well equipped and both bathrooms very functional.
We were fortunate to have very sunny and hot weather, so ceiling fans in the bedrooms would have been a real plus.
The garden is small but great for an evening drink or relaxing in the sun, with a little bit of TLC it could become a true gem.

One of the best cottages in The Cotswolds

Our second visit to Farthingdales in beautiful weather following our stay over Christmas. We were hoping to go back later again this year but it was booked. Such a fabulous cottage in terms of layout, cleanliness and location - cannot recommend this highly enough.
If this is free, book it!

Perfect stay in Burford

Farthingales is a beautiful cottage and we have a fantastic stay over the weekend for our friends wedding. Its proximity to the high street is perfect and the little garden in the back was an extra treat with the good weather we had. The setup in the cottage was extremely well thought out and has everything you could possibly need, even had milk in the fridge for our arrival!
I would recommend Farthingales to all my friends. Was a perfect stay for 4 people.

Christmas time in Burford

We were delighted to arrive at Farthingdales to be welcomed with a wreathe on the door and a lovely real Christmas tree. The property was very attractive and comfortable.
A guide to the working of the microwave and coffee machine would have been helpful.
Also sturdy heat resistant gloves for handling the logs/fire.
The main bedroom was cold and the radiator didn't seem to be working?
Otherwise we really liked it.

Great bridal cottage

We used this as a cottage for me and my bridesmaids to get ready in the morning of my wedding. Perfect communal space and everything was furnished beautifully.

Fabulous Farthingdales

We enjoyed every minute staying in this gorgeous cottage. The location, amenities + the spaciousness of this lovely historical house was worth every penny. The kitchen was well equipped, it had everything we needed for our 8 day stay. We would highly recommend Farthingdales as it very comfortable. Should we ever go back to The Cotswolds we would definitely choose to stay here again.

Gorgeous Costwold Cottage

A delightful cottage in the heart of Burford. The cottage was immaculately clean and tidy and extremely comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. Parking was never an issue and the house was charming. Oxford was an easy drive and the villages of the Costwolds are all within easy reach.

Lovely place to stay

It was a true pleasure to stay with our family of 4 in this lovely cottage. The interior is so high-end in every detail with a classic Cotswolds look-and-fool. Also the location in Burford is perfect with all amenities / nice local pubs at a few steps away!

A perfect getaway!

My husband and I stayed at Farthingdales for 4 nights. We both really wished we stayed longer! The cottage was just as described: very cozy, had comfortable bed (we only tried the king), clean and perfectly located. It had everything we needed. I have absolutely nothing negative to say. Booking and Check-in were easy. Well definitely come back for a longer stay!

Wonderful home away from home

We have stayed at Farthingdales Cottage the second time this summer and we loved it even more this time. The Cottage is beautifully decorated, has a very cosy yet stylish (but not overstyled) look and feel and is the perfect home away from home. This time, the weather was not as warm/sunny as during our stay in 2022, so we made good use of the wood burner in the living room and had cosy nights in in front of the fire with a glass of wine.
The cottage is spotlessly clean and has everything (and more) you need to make yourself feel at home. We especially love the open space living/dining room, the master bedroom upstairs and also the nice cottage garden, which is a sun trap during the whole day (if the sun is shining). Parking is on street and not an issue at all - we found our space, even on the busier weekends.
Burford is such a lovely village with lots of nice shops, a cheese monger and great pubs. Also, within a short driving you will find Daylesford Farm or the Wild Rabbit Pub in Kingham. Cheltenham with its lively highstreet and great restaurants is a short 30 minutes drive away, as is Oxford. So all in all, Burford sits ideally to benefit from everything the Cotswolds has to offer.
We are looking forward to staying again at Farthingdales and will highly recommend this property to our friends and families.

5* Excellent

We loved our stay at Farthingdales. The garden was beautiful, quiet and secluded. The house was amazing. Old and characterful. Everything you needed for a perfect holiday. A book is provided of the history of the village which we enjoyed doing. There are lovely walks from the door. Plenty places to eat. The only disappointing thing is having to leave and go home.

Faultless!

3 of us spent 6 days here after doing the Blenheim Team Triathlon and used it as a base for relaxing cycling around the beautiful local country lanes. Every aspect of Farthingdales is a delight. Interior design/decor is striking with lots of attention to detail. So, so stylish. Every comfort thought of and the squirrel climbing the lamp above the kitchen bar is typical of the quirkiness of this beautiful house. Right in centre of town yet quiet. Garden to relax in. Parking outside front door no problem. This house is a perfect combination of comfort and class.

Great stay

Loved this cottage. Location, decor and cleanliness. We thought the parking might be an issue but had no problem getting a space outside the front door.

Beautiful Burford

We had a lovely time in this beautifully presented, cosy cottage in the wonderful town of Burford. The super king size bed is the most comfortable that I have ever slept in. Everything you need for the perfect Cotswolds break.

Lovely bank holiday stay

We really enjoyed our stay at Farthingdales. It's the perfect location to access all the beauty the Cotswolds has to offer and Burford itself is a lovely town with plenty of shops and restaurants and pubs. The house itself is lovely, very clean with modern appliances and comforts. The kitchen in particular is very well stocked with everything you'd need to cook and we loved having breakfast at the breakfast bar counter. Bed was comfortable and loved the little hidden backyard garden and the proximity to the beautiful old church. Highly recommend for a weekend getaway.

Beautiful cottage in Burford

We stayed 4 nights in Farthingdales, the place was very close to the village center. Beautiful interior With lovey decor and furniture, the kitchen was fully equipped.
There was a small backyard but i was separated from the house.
All in all, it was a wonderful experience, I would definitely recommend it.

Cosy cottage in the centre of Burford

A typical Cotswold cottage, well decorated with interesting details, a well equipped kitchen, lovely private garden, two bathrooms, great beds, several up to date devices. Close to an astonishing medieval church and Burford's High Street just around the corner.
Unfortunately, some of the appliances didn't work al too well.
The waste bins were full as we arrived and nobody came to empty them. Although there were lots of instructions in the folder, nothing is said about a possibility of placing the bins down the street at the right time, so we could do little more than fill them yet a bit more.
The beds are great, but the duvets are rather thick, not exactly suitable when the temperature rises up to 40 degrees.

Beautiful Burford Cottage

We had a lovely weekend in Burford, the cottage was clean, comfortable, well equipped and perfectly located just off the high street with coffee shops, the church down the rods the river nearby and the lovely Burford garden centre a walk away. Highly recommend.

Quintessentially English. Extremely homely with outstanding finishes in a beautiful village. Highly recommended. ??????????

Farthingdales in April

What a wonderful stay we had in Farthingdales. The cottage had been furnished to a very high standard and was in a fabulous location. Dont be put off with the potential need to park in the nearby car park. It is a very short walk away, and pleasant enough.
Hikes, pubs, shops are all just a short walk away. The Cotswolds Wildlife Park was an excellent day out, as was the visit to Bourton-on-the-Water.
Only points to consider was the accuracy of the bins and where to find them (description in the house booklet didnt quite match), and the Wi-Fi code is incorrectly listed in the booklet also (have a look under the router-capital L). Very, very minor points that had not impact on our wonderful stay. Enjoy!!!
