Overview
Brown’s Cottage is a handsome, 17th Century, three-story, terraced Cotswold stone townhouse that sits on Brown’s Lane, a quiet road running down to the centre of the small market town of Charlbury. To the rear is a short path leading to a tall garden gate, through which is the cottage’s secluded patio.
Conveniently located just a minute’s walk from the centre of the village and ten minutes’ walk from Charlbury train station (built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1853), the cottage is on a residential road, with a small leafy park to one side, free on-street parking and a well-stocked food store across the road.
Step through the front door and you’ll instantly feel the warmth, history and style of the cottage. The owners have perfectly blended the gorgeous interior design, luxury furnishings and amenities with the cottage’s historic features. Guests will instantly notice the nod to the owner’s travels, with beautiful and interesting objet d’art throughout the cottage from the African continent. A spacious living room greets you, with the original inglenook fireplace and comfy armchairs to one end and a sofa and smart TV to the other. Head through into the delightful light and bright kitchen and dining area, with French doors to the patio. Upstairs are two spacious, king-size bedrooms, one ensuite, a single room and a luxury shower room.
Ground Floor
Entrance Hall:Step through the front door from Brown’s Lane into the welcoming Living Room. (A thick curtain is thoughtfully provided to draw across the front door on winter evenings.)
The Living Room:
You will be immediately struck by the spacious yet cosy feel of this beautifully stylish room, with its exposed Cotswold stone wall at both ends and exposed timbers running the length of the room. To one end is the original inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove and two large armchairs, perfectly positioned to curl up by the fire and relax or read, while to the other end is a three-seater sofa, coffee table and custom-built dresser housing the smart TV, extra drinks glasses and lots of novels and travel books. The Living Room has sisal flooring, perfectly blending with the tone of the fabrics and Cotswold stone, which continues upstairs to the bedrooms.
The Kitchen-Dining Area:
From the Living Room pass through an oak door into the delightful Kitchen-Dining Area. The kitchen is fully equipped to serve every need for cooks and chefs staying at Browns, from the Blanco stone sink to the Smeg appliances and Neff oven. The polished stone floor is softened with a large seagrass mat, while plenty of wall and ceiling lighting make the white stone kitchen surfaces a light and bright cooking space.
Beside the kitchen is the dining area set in a gorgeous bright and light extension with a lantern roof and a huge wicker lampshade, making this a fantastic space for entertaining and dining. An antique, rectangular table comfortably seats five guests on three chairs and a bench seat running along the window, looking out to the patio. (Outdoor cushions can be found under the bench.) An attractive upcycled antique sideboard houses serving plates, bowls, jugs and tableware.
Utility Room:
At the far end of the Kitchen-Dining Area is a sliding oak door behind which is an Aladdin’s Cave of appliances and household items, including the microwave, washing machine, dryer, ironing board, iron, clothes airer, and a large stone sink. A large window looks out from the Utility Room to the patio.
Study Area:
To one side of the Kitchen at the foot of the stairs, with the French windows opening to the patio, is a lovely space furnished with a beautiful antique desk and captain’s chair and reading lamp. It’s the perfect place to work or plan the day’s activities and leave maps, and books, and charge up personal devices.
First Floor
Bedroom 1 – Attic Master Bedroom:
At the top of the house (up two floors, in the converted attic), is the master bedroom with a king-size bed and ensuite bathroom. The sloping ceiling of this bedroom, with the black-iron, Victorian-style bedframe and sisal carpet creates the feeling of being on a luxury safari. The dual aspect views, to the front over the rooftops and to the rear over the patio, makes this is a light and bright bedroom. Furnished with bedside tables, reading lamps an antique dressing table, Lloyd Loom chair and a hanging rail, with a high windowsill adorned with beautiful decorative ornaments but leaving plenty of space for personal items too.
En-suite Bathroom:
To one end of the master bedroom, through a latched oak door, is the bathroom with full-size bath with hand shower, Burlington wash basin with mirror and lights, W.C., heated towel rail and a Velux window perfectly positioned so guests can relax in the bath and gaze up at the stars.
Bedroom 2:
The second double room is spacious, bright and light and features a king-size double bed with bedside tables and reading lamps, an exposed Cotswold stone wall and two window seats, overlooking Brown’s Lane. To one end is a lovely seating area with an antique dressing table, chair and lamp, double wardrobe and a wicker armchair – a delightfully relaxing place to retreat to for a snooze or read.
Bedroom 3:
This single bedroom is furnished with a full-size, slightly raised, single bed, with a reading light and storage underneath, while a chest of drawers and hooks are provided to store and hang clothing. (The cupboard houses the boiler.) Note: bedroom 3 is a small room (3m x 1.69m), so may not be comfortable for tall or larger guests.
Shower Room:
Immediately opposite the top of the first flight of stairs is the luxury shower room, featuring beautiful floor tiling, a large walk-in shower with overhead rain shower, two Burlington wash basins with mirrors, a toilet, a heated towel rail and a small armchair.
Outside
Step out through the French doors in the kitchen/study area to a delightful courtyard/patio that's a real suntrap when the sun shines. This is a completely private and secluded space with a bistro table and chairs and a bench seat that faces towards the kitchen, the perfect place to perch with the French doors open and chat to the cook busily working in the kitchen. A Weber charcoal BBQ is provided for guests' use. A back gate with a latch on the inside only leads from the courtyard patio to Pooles Lane and the adjacent park.

The Location
Charlbury is a small but lively and vibrant market town that has escaped the hordes of Cotswold tourists, making it a justifiable member of the ‘Undiscovered Cotswold Club’, yet it is only an hour from London and just 15 minutes’ drive from Soho Farmhouse. The town is full of historic 17th- and 18th-century buildings, has great pubs, independent shops, a local history museum and is in a beautiful setting on the meandering River Evenlode, with fabulous walks in every direction, including around the Charlbury Circular Route and along The Oxfordshire Way and The Cotswold Way.
You will find local interest brochures and maps at the cottage, providing plenty of inspiration for places to visit and things to do.

What a beautiful cottage, gorgeous decor, comfortable bedding, a cake and milk upon arrival along with fluffy towels and stocked logs for the wood burning stove. Not to mention its perfect location to the village pubs and shop. We will be back 😁 thank you.
Emily
A very tasteful renovated cottage. Perfectly located in the village so you could walk to the pubs for dinner or cafe in the morning for fresh bread & coffee. It has a great little fireplace as well as heating in all the rooms so it was very cosy. I would highly recommend.
Amanda
Loved this beautiful cottage! The location is perfect! Quaint, quiet, village life vibes! I recommend making time to have a long lazy breakfast in the kitchen. If you can. It was a lovely place to sit. Dinner in the bull and bell pub also terrific. Thank you for having us I am looking forward to a return visit!

Quick hiking break in the Cotswolds

If you are looking for a quaint cottage in the Cotswolds (with all the modern amenities), Browns Cottage is a great choice. Easy access to hiking and great local pubs. The grocery store store and post office are very close. If you are tall, you have to watch the beams in the living room; and you have to lug your suitcases up the stairs. All part of the quaintness. Easy train access to Oxford and London.

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. It was very comfortable and easily accessible from the train station. We had a fantastic dinner at The Bull which is less than a minute away and also enjoyed a beautiful walk around the Cornbury House estate.

Absolutely stunning find, easy to communicate with hosts, it was a lovely stay and all perfect.
Rachel
Absolutely perfect property - brought my family here on their first trip to the Cotswolds and I'm so happy we picked this place! Beautifully decorated, great kitchen to cook in, right in the middle of the village, and easy to walk to from the train station. Highly recommend!

A lovely little cottage

The cottage was very cosy and comfortable, and we appreciated having three bedrooms and two bathrooms (albeit none downstairs). There was a good sized dining table, large fridge and all the kitchen amenities. Sofa was very comfortable and Sky TV in the lounge. Decent hairdryer, soft towels and toiletries provided. The location was lovely and perfect for our miles without styles walk on the first day. Lovely coffee at the deli a short walk away and a well stocked co-op 30 seconds away. We would stay again.

Perfect for a short stay. We were happy bunnies!

We had a very relaxed stay at Browns Cottage in Charlbury. Beds were comfortable, bathrooms were of a decent size and a great rain shower off the main bedroom. Dining area was clean and the place was bathed in sunlight. Two suggestions. A second set of keys would be handy, especially when there are four people staying and secondly in the summer it would be prudent to have a flat sheet on the bed, should one want to not use the duvet. But all in all, we were happy bunnies.

Perfect

This is a beautiful cottage in the heart of Charlbury, excellently equipped and very comfortable! We loved the patio and appreciated the tea, coffee and milk provided.

In the heart of Charlbury

The location of Brown's Cottage in the heart of Charlbury could not have been better. With just a short few steps to the high street a walk to the station and an easy drive through the Cotswolds, the hop to the shops, skip to the city of Oxford and hazy days spent amidst the criss-cross lanes were all that we had hoped for.
Well-equipped and artfully dressed, the house felt very much like a home.
The only thorns in its side were the restrictive and unclear parking facilities within the village. To remove the concerns that we had each day, I would suggest that a couple of residents' permits be provided with the rental of the house.

We had the most wonderful four days staying here. We used it as our family base whilst we went to Wilderness, and it was absolutely perfect. So cosy, beautiful - absolutely all the amenities. The village is picturesque with a wonderful little coffee shop, and the pub is delicious. I will 100% book another trip! Maybe next time in the autumn with some friends.

Lovely stay

Browns Cottage is a pretty cottage, beautifully decorated. The beds were all very comfortable (although the third bedroom was tiny), with fans provided as the weather was very warm. Its just a few steps away from the fabulous Bull pub and well stocked Co-Op and Deli. The outside area was appreciated, and we sat there with a drink before dinner.
Residents Permit Holder parking has just recently been introduced, so the instructions provided for guest parking were incorrect. Guests are unable to park on the road anywhere near the cottage - its either in the public car park (which is free), but only for a maximum of 12 hours. Or road parking some distance away. I think the instructions need to be altered so guests are aware before arrival.

Browns Cottage Outstanding!

We arrived from Canada for a wedding and family reunion! Browns Cottage is perfect for a stay in Charlbury! It is ideal for 2 couples or a family. The cottage is beautifully appointed and has everything you need! It is across the street from a Coop store that has everything you need. I filled the house with fresh flowers, wine and delicious baked goods! The fantastic deli and coffee shops are 1 block. The Bull Pub restaurant is at the corner. It was awarded best pub in UK 2025! Delicious dinner menu and outdoor seating. The Bell is also close and has pizza and a park in the back with separate service.
Parking close to Browns Cottage was along park, otherwise very difficult due to permits only on the streets.
I read all the reviews before I booked and it was beyond anything I was expecting! We stayed 6 days and didnt want to leave!!
Charlbury is beautiful and is easy by train from London. We had a car and explored the Cotswolds cities, towns and countryside!!
Thank you to the owners who allow us to enjoy your beautiful home and to Bothole Retreats who provided excellent correspondence!

Lovely Cotswolds break

Delightful cottage, beds super comfy and we had a great stay. Would come back. Only little criticism was the back terrace could have been swept but didnt spoil our stay.

Browns Cottage, Charlbury

We spent Christmas at Browns Cottage. We found the cottage to be clean and pleasantly appointed. We had asked for Xmas decorations and there was an artificial tree with lights. Had hoped for a little more but appreciated the tree and a basket of goodies.
The cottage is situated directly onto the pavement of a road which can be noisy at times and opposite and just below a Co-op supermarket. The main bedroom was used only for our stay and was comfortable with a well appointed shower room close by. The single bedroom on the same floor is small with the bed built into the alcove next to the boiler cupboard. The room is probably best suited to a child. The second double bedroom is on the top floor accessed by an uncarpeted staircase which is not the easiest to use. There is a small bathroom servicing that room with a bath, toilet, basin and no shower. There is a shower attachment on the bath which could be used for hair washing when taking a bath. There is no cloakroom downstairs. Because we were just two people we managed with the one shower room. The kitchen and laundry are reasonably well appointed with a small table taking 4 to 5 persons using a bench for one side. The cottage is adequately heated and there is a small pleasant outside sitting area. Parking was a challenge. Charlbury is a very pleasing village with a Church and two good eating places and a Deli.
On the 23rd of December there was an issue with the cottage which we needed to report and take advice. We telephoned Bolthole Cottages and received an automated message saying that any issues would need to be reported to the Housekeeper. We therefore telephoned the mobile number of the Housekeeper to receive no reply and we therefore left a message to contact us. We received no response. Again did the same on the 24th with a voicemail plus one more call on the 27th and again no response. When the Bolthole Cottage Team were back on duty after the Xmas break we made a call to them and explained. We still have not received an adequate explanation of why there was no response during our stay. I have given them screen shots of the record of the calls.

Very comfortable and cosy cottage

We felt immediately at home at Browns Cottage, which was immaculately clean, extremely well stocked with every possible thing that we could have needed supplied. Beds were very comfortable with beautiful linen. Parking was a challenge but we did not move our cars over our two day stay, as we did a lovely walk from the cottage door - the Charlbury circular, via Cornbury Park and the pub at Finstock (about 5 miles, easy). The Bull pub is a few yards away and we enjoyed a tasty meal on one night.

Week stay in Chalbury

I cannot fault this property - a fantastic house with beautiful interiors and all within stumbling distance of The Bull pub. A fantastic stay, thank you very much!

Amazing stay at Browns

We loved our stay at Browns Cottage. Extremely clean, beautifully decorated, exactly as the pictures show. Ideal central location close to several gastro pubs and local stores. Only 15 minutes from Soho Farmhouse. Would highly recommend staying here and we cant wait to go back.

A great stay

We enjoyed our stay at Browns Cottage and the lovely Charlbury. We had an initial issue with the heating but would like to thank Debbie who helped to sort it out and, in particular, Darryl who rang and talked us through the process - whilst on his honeymoon!! Sorry to disturb you, Darryl but thanks again.

Second visit

This was my 2nd stay at Browns cottage and I honestly cant fault it. Its so beautifully designed, the beds are supremely comfy, the showers amazing. Just love it!

3 weeks in Charlbury

Lovely property! Enjoyed our stay! Great location in Charlbury, comfy beds. Great shower. Nicely decorated and perfect for us. We will be back!

Perfect location in a lovely small village

The house is pretty and the small town is lovely. A big mistake; You cant put your legs under the dining table. I forgot my earrings. Called and texted the host, but never did I get a reply! In the garden behind the Bell you can relax and drink cocktails and eat pizza. A hidden gem.

A lovely cottage close to key Cotswolds sites

We loved staying at Browns Cottage. It is a beautifully presented traditional cottage with modern conveniences - fast internet, Netflix, supermarket a few steps away. The only two things I would fix is to change the basin taps (having two confusing taps vs one - but at least they went into one mixer) and a better shower in the top bedroom (rather than a hand mixer over a bath). Otherwise its perfect.

Simply Ideal

The location, comfort, and feel of the cottage was everything we were hoping for. What a superb location as well, just a stones throw away from one of the Cotswolds best pubs, The Bull. Will be returning and would highly recommend!

Great find

Such a lovely comfortable property. Well equipped kitchen.
Just a shame that we booked for an early Christmas celebration with friends and dispite phoning up and being told the house would be decorated for Christmas to our disappointment it wasnt!

Lovely holiday cottage in Charlbury

Really enjoyed our stay at Browns cottage: it was well furnished and the beds were super comfy. The only downsides were the dryer did not work which was very challenging trying to dry washing and parking could be very hard, but I guess that is the nature of period cottages!
Andrea Guit
Perfect place to stay to visit the Cotswolds

As soon as we arrived we realised we had picked the perfect place to stay to visit he Cotswolds. Unlike many places we have stayed in this cottage was better than the pictures on the website! It would be our dream little cottage to buy with a great number of pubs on the door step and a shop within walking distance. We did a few walks from the cottage and also drove a short way to his around Burford and the Upper and Lower Slaughters.
Inside the cottage it was well appointed although there is no toilet no the ground floor which would be our only gripe.
Philip Shaw
A short, but sweet stay in a lovely cottage

Two friends and myself really enjoyed our stay at Browns Cottage. It is very comfortable and well appointed. Charlbury is a small, pretty Cotswolds town. We had a fabulous meal in the garden of the newly renovated Bull Inn which is a few steps away from the cottage.
Patricia Barnard-Smith
Beautifully curated, comfortable, light filled cottage in the lovely village of Charlbury.

Browns Cottage is a beautifully restored, uniquely and comfortably furnished home in a lovely Cotswold Village close to many of our favorite footpaths and gardens. Everything you might need is walking distance including the Charlbury train station. Nearby street parking was not an issue for us. Favorite gardens of at least 6 visited were Kiftsgate and Bourton House Garden as well as some of the private garden tours open for charity on select days. The Bull Inn was enjoying a soft opening during our stay and was quite delicious for an evening meal option steps from the cottage.
Evelyn Raines
Perfect stay

We wish our three nights at Browns Cottage had been longer - it was absolute perfection for our family of four (kids 12 and 14). The photos dont do it justice, it is simply beautiful inside with extremely comfortable beds and everything we needed. Plentiful hot water, lots of plugs for devices, tons of light, set in a small, quiet, charming Cotswold town with a grocery store literally across the street and a bakery/deli around the corner. Easy train ride into Oxford for a day trip and car ride to Silverstone for a racing experience. Our favorite part of our entire trip to England!

Wonderful Cottage in heart of Cotswolds

Browns Cottage is a gorgeous and extremely well maintained home. It has beautiful interiors of interest and comfort. The location is excellent with amenities on your doorstep and the train station only 10 mins away.

Browns is the Best!

Browns Cottage is the perfect retreat from London! The cottage is beautiful, clean, and so well-equipped. The village presents everything you need - a great pub, a cafe, a small grocery store, and a few really great walking paths. Ive recommended the cottage over and over again to friends. It is simply the best!
Sarah Dally
Excellent cottage.

Very clean comfortable cottage in a good position in centre of village. Owners thought of everything.

Lovely Cottage

Clean, welcoming, comfortable and great location for trips to Oxford and Blenheim. Couldn't have asked for more! Thank you.
Ruth Ormond
Gorgeous and very well appointed cottage.

Browns Cottage is as lovely as it looks from the pictures, even more so in fact. The living areas are fantastic and we would love to come back in the winter time and light the fire! The two double bedrooms are great, with desk areas and wardrobe space and plenty of light. We were particularly impressed by the number of coat hangers available. There are some really great features in the property, such as the velux in the family bathroom, that make a real difference. The kitchen is well-appointed, and the utility area great. The only downside is the third bedroom, which really is only suitable for a child - something that is mentioned in the description, but which I had overlooked. The courtyard is a real sun trap, and would perhaps benefit from a few its of plants/flowers to brighten it up a bit. All in all though, a great property to which we would happily return. Next time though, I will be taking one of the double bedrooms!

Lovely long weekend at Browns Cottage

Just returned from a long weekend at Browns Cottage - this is our second time here - it was as lovely as last year. Very comfortable. Nice layout over 3 floors. Opposite a food store, a few steps from a lovely pub (The Bull Inn) and theres a nice deli just down the road. Charlbury is a small village, its very pretty and its an easy drive to many other charming towns and villages
Jane Carter
Fabulous stay would love to return.

We stayed at Browns cottage for three nights to attend the Nocturn concert at Blenheim Palace. The cottage is absolutely fabulous with beautiful interior design, every possible comfort and a delightful outside patio. Charlbury Village is quiet but well appointed for visiting other more well-known villages in the local area. An absolute bonus, almost opposite the cottage is a really well stocked co-op store with everything you might need for a self catering break. We wished we had booked for longer and hope to return.

Cotswold Perfection!

After an exciting Jubilee week in London, we came to the welcoming arms of Brown's Cottage. It was everything we imagined an English Countryside stay would be! The charming town of Charlbury was so very pleasant. The people we met were so welcoming! Needless to say, we did not want to leave this beautiful and well appointed cottage. We will dream of this vacation often! Thank you!

Lovely location

House was very relaxing and just what we needed. We loved the town and really easy access to local attractions, Oxford and even getting to London for a meeting was very simple.
Thanks so much

Very pleasant stay at Browns Cottage

The cottage was very cosy and homely. We thorough enjoyed our stay. Lovely fire, very good shower in family bath room and very comfortable beds.

Perfect weekend away

We knew that we liked the photos and the location of the house, but our stay this weekend far exceeded our expectations. The house is more spacious than the photos seem and it was spotlessly clean. The fittings are high quality and the spaces felt very homely. The only thing to be aware of is that the boiler is housed in the cupboard next to the bed in the single bedroom which creates some noise.

Girls weekend

Lovely cottage. Lovely location. Would return. Would be even better if the wIfi worked so you could watch tv.

Walking country

An attractively modernised cottage that was a good base for walks in the attractive Cotswold countryside around Charlbury. The weather was sunny and we were able to use the BBQ in the courtyard garden.

Lovely Cotswold Cottage

Browns cottage was very comfortable and spacious, well located near the centre of Charlbury and only a ten minute walk from the train station.
There was a great shower with lovely toiletries and the beds were comfortable,

Simply gorgeous

This is a beautiful cottage, well appointed, well located, exceptionally clean - simply amazing. The host is very accommodating, essentials in the fridge to settle us in, the decor is gorgeous, it is a good size, there are no downsides to this place. I am already thinking about the next trip.
