Lady Jane Grey Cottage is part of a carefully restored paper mill on the Sudeley Castle Estate and it retains touches of the original building with styling reminiscent of that found at castle. Tapestries hang on the open stone wall in the living room and decorative fireplaces remain in the bedroom. With three bedrooms and a large ground floor it is a spacious cottage perfect for your stay in this part of the Cotswolds. Walking distance from the village of Winchcombe you have a host of country pubs and restaurants on your doorstep and Sudeley Castle is easily reached across the fields. Outside the gravelled courtyard gives you the opportunity to dine al fresco and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this location.

During your stay, you are entitled to free admission to Sudeley Castle and Gardens during the Castle’s open season (except for separately ticketed events).

Overview

Lady Jane Grey Cottage is one of Sudeley Castle’s largest country cottages, and is named after Lady Jane Grey who lived at Sudeley Castle before her brief nine-day reign as Queen of England. This lovely cottage was originally part of a paper mill, which was restored to make two cottages and two apartments, preserving the original exposed walls and beams throughout.

This two-storey cottage has a large open plan living area on the ground floor which is split across two levels. The well-equipped kitchen is incredibly spacious and there is a desk area to catch up on work or browse your laptop to find where you'd like to spend your next day in the Cotswolds. The slightly separated sitting and dining area have plenty of space to dine together around the table or lounge in front of TV in the evenings. Two doors at the end open out into the gravelled courtyard enlarging your living space to include this handy outdoor area. Each bedroom has been well furnished with comfortable beds and storage space and the open walls throughout remind you of the history of this building. The more modern family bathroom combines these exposed walls with olive panelling and a wood effect floor.

The Sudeley Cottages are set a short walk from both the village of Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle which you must visit during your stay. Further afield Cotswold highlights including Cheltenham, Broadway and Bourton-on-the-Water are a lovely day out.

The dining area has a large circular oak table, seating five, while the other end features two large, sink-in sofas, a TV and oak coffee table. Great location, but disappointing stay

Verified Up Front Reviews
We loved the location and the proximity to the castle - it was perfect for getting into town and to the wedding. However, we were pretty disappointed with the overall standard of the accommodation, given the price. There were cobwebs in nearly every room, the sofas felt quite worn, and the beds were small and very creaky, which made it difficult to sleep. While we appreciated that the house was well-equipped, the quality simply didn’t match our expectations or the price.

No regrets, a lovely retreat

My family of four stayed here for three nights in August and it was a great decision. Having stayed in Winchcombe previously on High St, I found this location of the Lady Jane Grey Cottage to be preferable as it is closer to the castle and many of the walks leaving Winchcombe. We enjoyed the home tremendously such as the tea supplies including milk that was a nice welcoming touch and cooked a few meals ourselves in the fully stocked kitchen, even tried out the outdoor grill. With two teens we had plenty of room upstairs and on the main level that allowed us to relax and unwind; it was very comfortable and well furnished. Having more information on the buildings that make up the courtyard would have been interesting and we found the information provided on the local walks and attractions very helpful. Enjoyed marvellous meals at the Lion's Inn and White Hart Inn, but the best part was the proximity of the cottage to all amenities we really didn't need a car. I would stay here again without hesitation.

I have stayed at these stunning apartments previously. A fantastic location, with ample parking. The cottages are all beautiful and have everything you need, right down to salt and pepper. A great place for exploring the Cotswolds as its very central.

It was so quiet! The cottage was lovely and well provisioned. Despite being cold outside the cottage stayed warm at all times. It's a short walk to the centre of the lovely Cotswold town of Winchcombe which has plenty of good eateries and drinking places. We had a great weekend and we're glad we chose this cottage to stay in.

Family Christmas in the Cotswolds

Verified Up Front Reviews
Our family of 5 stayed here for a few nights. The cottage is lovely and the kitchen is a particularly good size. It was clean, well equipped and all the furniture is in good condition, although we all thought the beds were not long enough. We also did not expect to have neighbours in an apartment on a floor above the cottage, they were quite noisy and it detracted from the cottage feel. There is parking behind the cottages but we struggled to find a park some days. We liked to proximity to the village and walks in the surrounding countryside.

Weekend retreat

Verified Up Front Reviews
My sister and I took our mum away to Sudeley Castle for the weekend. The accommodation was perfect for us and we thoroughly enjoyed making the most of the castle and discovering Winchcombe. The accommodation is in a lovely converted paper mill and we enjoyed the original features in the architecture. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. I would say that just a little more attention to detail would make the place absolutely perfect. For example, none of the bedroom curtains closed properly and the lovely outside seating area needed some weeding - it wouldn't take much to fix these things so it seems a shame that they were overlooked. Otherwise, a great weekend.

A perfect stay in Winchcombe!

Verified Up Front Reviews
We had the most enjoyable stay at the Lady Jane Grey cottage. It was just what we needed for our stay in the Cotswolds (a comfortable, well appointed home base). It was a perfectly central location for visiting all of the lovely towns, but Winchcombe itself was one of the towns we most enjoyed. We loved spending time walking around the town and exploring Sudeley Castle (we loved that admission was included with the stay). The kids loved walking through the field with the sheep and playing on the Sudeley playground. They especially loved the obstacle course and zip line. I wouldn’t hesitate to book again; next time we’ll plan it better and stay longer!

Depressing cottage in need of upgrade

Verified Up Front Reviews
We stayed in The Lady Jane Grey cottage on the outskirts of the Sudeley Castle Estate; a 5 minute walk from Winchcombe village. The cottage was described as having ‘a private courtyard garden’, which we were looking forward to relaxing in during the evenings, once we returned from exploring The Cotswolds. However, the area was just a small, gravelled space, with a low wall, overlooking the car park, so although it was self-contained, it certainly wasn’t very private and it was quite ugly to look at. A couple of the outdoor chairs were broken, meaning we couldn’t have sat there anyway. The gate leading from the car park into the ‘courtyard’ was hanging off its hinges, which was a bit concerning safety-wise, when there are children in the party. The living area can only be described as quite drab and depressing and certainly wasn’t welcoming. The seal around the bath has gone and water is obviously leaking, as there is a large water stain coming through to the ceiling. Wardrobe in single room is broken, broken socket in the front bedroom and curtain rail needs attention in the twin room, so it was difficult to close the curtains at night. Building work is going on within the cottage estate so we were woken up around 7:30 each morning by lorries. Considering this, I feel the cottage is over-priced and the whole party of 5 were disappointed.

Nice cottage near walks, castle and pubs

Verified Up Front Reviews
We really enjoyed our stay at Lady Jane's cottage: comfortable, historic but modern redecorated. We stayed with 5 of us. We had enough space, the only thing to bear in mind is that the (only) toilet is upstairs in the bathroom. There's a lot to do starting at the cottage: make a walk in the Cotswolds, walk to Sudely castle or visit the village (only 150 meters).

Not really happy...

Verified Up Front Reviews
All communication prior to our arrival was fine! Winchcombe is extremely charming and Sudeley castle a must see! But upon arrival we found a number of things that we had not expected: Some of the windows did not work properly. The kitchen window could not be locked. That's why we talked to (the very kind) electrician on the premises the day after our arrival. But no repair was done while we were there. The rim of the bathtub was rather badly broken. A big dent was in the wall next to it. The bathroom window could only be operated with force and when stepping into the bathtub. As in other rooms, it could not be positioned in the desired way since the friction was too small. We showed it all to electrician working on the premises. But no reaction from maintenance. The bagless vacuum cleaner had not been taken care of for a long, long time. It had lost its ability to actually vaccum because it was clogged with dirt. Not a nice job to take care of, but we did it in order to be able to vacuum. There were too few dishes for a party of 5. Also, the quality of the dishes and the silverware was rather poor for a property of this price range. We missed instructions on how to operate the TV (not self explanatory - at least for foreigners). What we missed most was a warning prior to our booking that Lady Grey tenants are rather unable to sleep once the tenants in the upstairs apartment wake up and start walking/jumping (kids) around.

Spotlessly clean, cosy cottage

Verified Up Front Reviews
Lovely cottage, extremely clean although the cleaning products used were very strong smelling and a little overwhelming. Everything you need is there for a comfortable stay although the curtains in the twin bedroom would not fully close. The noise from the apartment above would probably have been an issue if we had stayed longer than 2 nights as you can hear people walking around above you and their TV sounded like it was right over our double bed. We would stay again, as the location is lovely, but in a detached cottage so we weren't worried about the noise from above

Great location, good value cottage. Well equipped modern kitchen with good appliances. Managing with one bathroom and no downstairs toilet was difficult, but we obviously knew this on booking, it was the only one available. The shower dripped continuously and one set of bedroom curtains had come off the runners and couldn’t be closed. However I contacted Sudeley on day 2 and someone came out to fix these things quickly. The heating was on summer setting and couldn’t be turned on, after one cold day, the excellent maintenance man kindly sorted this out as well. Excellent parking and location, overall good value stay.We would stay at Sudeley again, but a different cottage with more than one bathroom.

Lots of great things about this cottage and complex. Large carpark at the back allowing you to park behind your cottage and unload through back entrance. Steps into Sudley castle grounds right by cottages. Getting free entry into castle is brilliant, playpark really good and the castle gardens are really nice. Castle itself was surprisingly interesting. Outside area of cottage nice, big enough to play some games in and sit outside. Kitchen large and well equipped, we cooked a Sunday dinner in it. Winchcombe is really nice and there is a great coop to stock up on supplies.

We have just returned from a wonderful short break in Winchcombe staying in one of the Sudeley Castle Cottages - Lady Jane Grey. The location is amazing absolutely loved the cluster of cottages in an area just off Castle Street which comes off the high street in Winchcombe. Brilliant for walking into the high street (5 mins) where there is a good choice of pubs and restaurants. The accommodation was excellent - very clean and they thought of everything in providing household essentials. There are plenty of walks to keep you busy - I would certainly be returning again next year and the next !!!!

We had booked this cottage for a family wedding, which was them moved to later in the year due to covid restrictions. We all agreed to come anyway for a family get together, and we are very pleased that we did. The cottage was lovely and in a great location, with our family very close by in neighbouring cottages. We did have a problem with our hot water on the first morning but this was sorted very promptly. We had a meal out at The Plough Inn at Ford nearby which was great. It was very nice to have entry to the castle included in our accommodation, and we enjoyed our visit there. I lovely weekend in a lovely cottage.

We really enjoyed our stay in the cottage which is in an excellent location 500 yards or so from the Main Street of Winchcombe. Would definitely visit Winchcombe again with its excellent range of amenities & so many walks to do. Only negative in respect of the cottage is that it definitely needs better quality & more comfortable outdoor seating & table - the wooden table & chairs had definitely seen better days, very rickety & with no other garden chairs, very uncomfortable if you wanted to sit out & enjoy the lovely weather for a few hours.

We had a great few days in Winchcombe. Main reason for visiting was to see the Christmas illuminations at Sudely Castle which were excellent. Really liked the lady Jane grey cottage , very clean and neat and everything you needed was in it . But I would have liked a few more tea and coffee bags as we were only there for 1.5 days and a little welcome pack would have been a lovely idea for us ( it doesn’t cost much but is a really nice touch ) . The cottage was very noisy in the early hours - could hear people over us walking around as if they were in our own house , floors v creaky so were woken up ard 6.30 both mornings as others were up then . I couldn’t regulate the shower on the first day as it was v stiff and hard to move back to get cold water but my husband managed to do it for his shower after me . I would find the steps from kitchen to dining a little inconvenient especially when bringing down tea , food etc . And we found it expensive for the 1.5 days we were there

Fabulous happy family holiday in a delightful area. Even torrential rain didn't adversely affect it.

This was our fourth family holiday at Sudeley Castle. The area is delightful, so walks and bike-rides can't help but be enjoyable. There are so many lovely little villages in the Cotswolds that a motoring holiday is equally as pleasant. The cottages are comfortable, warm and well appointed and contain all the little comforts of home. There is no doubt that my family and I hope to return to Sudeley Castle on future occasions.

I will be bragging to friends about this stay for years

I had trouble getting in, as the cottages do not have an office to check in at. I was given a lockbox code for my keys, but the code had changed since it was given to me. I was also given a phone number to call for assistance, but I am visiting from America and my phone won't let me call UK phone numbers. I walked with my luggage to Sudeley Castle itself (dragging said luggage through the mud) only to learn that they know nothing of the cottage bookings and were unable to assist. I walked back, and fortunately a member of Bolthole staff was next door cleaning another cottage. She was able to get me the new lockbox code. This happy coincidence is all that saved check-in from being a total disaster. However, once I did get inside, everything was utterly immaculate and the difficulty of getting in was quickly overshadowed. This place is a dream. My only suggestions: Lady Jane Grey deserves a larger portrait on the wall (it looks rather small being all alone on that massive wall), and her parents deserve better frames on their portraits. The washer & dryer is not good at all at actually drying the clothes, but a radiator did the job. All in all these were minor quibbles in an absolutely magnificent stay. I would recommend this place to anyone, and already am doing so.

Outstanding stay at Lady Jane Grey, Sudeley Castle, Cotswolds

We absolutely loved this property and unreservedly recommend it. It was a great location, Winchcombe is just the right size with enough conveniences to make one's stay comfortable. Free access to Sudeley Castle was a very nice bonus as well. The kitchen had everything we could need, the rooms were very well done and the bath was spotless. A completely charming place - would definitely come back again.

A fantastic few days

We had a wonderful stay within the Lady Jane Grey cottage. Beautifully picturesque with a real wow factor. The accommodation was well looked after and spotless in all areas. Access was straightforward and as described. The castle itself was a brilliant experience for the whole family which helped having free access as a staying resident. The location is also great - easy drive to Cheltenham, Cirencester and other smaller villages. Highly recommended.

A very nice place close to all facilities. The children loved the adventure playground at the castle. We as adults found the castle and grounds an excellent place to explore. the town has many fine eating venues

Housekeeping issues

Verified Up Front Reviews
The ambiance and the location of the cottage was superb. The cottage was cosy and warm. However we had a number of issues. This was due to poor housekeeping of the cottage. 1. The curtain to the front door was hanging off, This was reported to the office but it was not acted upon (message on answer phone) 2Broken blind in kitchen, 3 Dirty oven needed a deep clean. 4 Kitchen knives needed sharpening and a breadboard and chopping board not available. 5 Children's nightwear found at the back of the door in the twin bedded room. 6 Bathroom door wouldn't close and the twin bedded room also wouldn't close. 6 The TV needed to be on a stand as it tilted also too near to the curtain and radiator. 7 It was difficult to open and close the back door. The housekeeping in the cottage should be looked at.

Cute convenient classically Cotswolds cottage complex

The cottage is part of a development of holiday cottages from traditional stone outbuildings on the Sudely Castle estate. It is warm, roomy, clean and has neutral decor. The shower worked very well and the bath is big. The kitchen had all the basics needed. It is located on the outskirts of a beautiful village, you can walk to the highstreet, the pub and the historic church. There is a shared garden/green area which leads onto the parking area, so kids need to be supervised.

Nice cottage but........

Verified Up Front Reviews
This is a lovely little cottage? But with a couple of things people should know about before booking. Firstly, the phrase cottage led us to believe it was detached or at least semi-detached but in fact it is part of a terrace of 'cottages' either side and a flat above. The problem with people staying above us was constant creaky floorboards and noises. This is fine if you have someone who goes to bed at 09.30pm, but if like us they are up to the early hours of the morning it made sleeping very difficult. Not a great experience. Also, parking was separate to the cottages and as it was very busy, we had to park on muddy grass a little distance from the cottage. Again not the end of the world but worth noting so you bring a torch & umbrella!
